  • E7400 Stable @ 3.6 GHz on EP43-UD3L

    I gave up on the quest for 3.8GHz on the E7400 and settled for a stable 3.6GHz. Used the Intel Burn Test utility to quickly zero in on the needed settings. Be careful if you use this tool as it runs MUCH hotter than Prime95. You need to have CoreTemp running and monitor the temps. The up side is you can do in minutes what otherwise would take hours. I will admit I'm midway though a 24-hour Prime95 test as this is the first time I used Intel Burn. It is looking good but will report back if any changes.

    A few of things I learned about my E7400 & P43 motherboard:
    - Few people on the planet are trying to overclock this setup - with good reason!
    - Ignore the CPU TCase temp and use a utility like CoreTemp or Hardware Monitor to watch the TJunction (core) readings.
    - With excessive Vcore, the BIOS starts to get flakey and forget some settings. Also, Windows drivers would disappear, USB ports shut down, etc.
    - If you can't decide between buying a P43 or a P45 and want to overclock, go with the P45. I own one of each and wish both were P45's.
    - I also should have done my homework and gone with an E5xxx or E8xxx CPU. Live and learn.

    The P43 BIOS has fewer settings than the P45 and voltage adjustments are not as fine. I'm running a 455MHz FSB on my P45. No way I could touch that with the P43.

    With an E5xxx series you almost certainly wouldn't have got 3.8GHz, and they'll come with 2MB of cache rather than 3MB. You will also find SSE4.1 is missing from the E5xxx series, as they are sold under the "Pentium Dual Core" designation, and aren't officially Core 2 Duo's.

    You may well be able to get a higher stable clock by adjusting MCH and CPU reference voltages, although I see you haven't included MCH Ref in your template, so it may not be present on the P43 BIOS.

    E7xxx series are generally good over clockers. The problem these days seems to be that everyone is expecting CPUs they buy to be able to clock to a billion jiggahertz. a 1.140Ghz over clock is huge, and is nothing to be sneezed at. Over clocking is 40% skill and 60% luck. You may have a great chip, and get huge speeds, you may not, and nobody is entitled to any overclocking head room. If it were a guaranteed thing, Intel would sell a range at 4GHz, and make even more cash.

      My E7400 does 3.6 but to go any higher requires at least 1.4V so I'm happy where I'm at.

          1.35v in bios, 1.328v according to CPUZ.

            Interesting that my board needed 1.3625v in BIOS to result in the same 1.328v in CPU-Z.

            I don't see it listed in the specs but I wonder if the P45-UD3P has a superior CPU power circuit, maybe 6-phase vs. 4-phase.

                The EP43-UD3L is a good mobo for modest overclocks. I've seen several references to a 420MHz maximum cpu speed with the EP43 series.

                The EP45 series offers more features and a more sophisticated bios. Naturally, the EP45 mobos cost more.
