  • UD3R boot question

    Hi
    I just built a PC with a Q6600 and UD3R.
When I cold boot the power light and fans start up for a second and then both turn off for another second and then starts again and boots.
    Is this normal?

nekromantik, I have a UD3R with an E8400. When I hit the switch, the fans and lights start almost instantly and stay on. The lights go out after the initial boot sequence.

What hardware have you installed, including the PSU?

        Got Q6600 G0
        4GB Corsair XMS2 RAM @ stock settings
        Corsair 650W TX PSU
        Geforce GTX260 gfx
        500GB WD HD

If I restart the PC then its normal, as the fans and power light stay on and it boots. Only from cold boots does it start up and then go off and then power on and boot.

          Re: UD3R boot question

Well, the PSU is more than adequate. A few other questions:

          - Does the computer operate normally after it boots?
          - Have you selected "Load Optimized Defaults" in your bios?
          - Have you flashed the latest bios (F9, dated 4/16/09)? If not, do it using Q-Flash, NOT @BIOS (it has a spotty track record). Immediately after flashing, go into the bios and load the optimized defaults again.

I've heard, I think in this forum, that the cpu fan may delay before starting, but I've not heard of it doing what you describe.

Also, are you using a battery backup (UPS)?

yes if the cpu fan is on smart fan it does delay on start.

Yeah once it boots everything is normal.
I dont mean the CPU fan, I mean all fans and the power light on the case.
They all go on and then off agen and then back on and it boots normally. Only happens after cold boots.
Not using UPS and not flashed to latest bios. If there are no problems with the PC not starting or being stable then do I really need to update BIOS?

                Re: UD3R boot question

You don't normally need to update bios if you're not having issues. I'm using F8 on a v1.1 board and will leave it be for now.

I'm tinkering with my rig right now to see if I can get it to behave like yours. Nothing yet...

                  Re: UD3R boot question

I have OCed my CPU to 3ghz with fsb @ 333 and ram at 2.40B strap so it runs at 800mhz which is the stock speed with stock voltage of 1.9v.
                  Could that be the issue?
Should I up the RAM voltage to 2.0v?

                    Re: UD3R boot question

I changed the RAM voltage to 2.0v and it still does that.
                    Anyone got any ideas?

                      Re: UD3R boot question

Have you tried loading the BIOS default settings? If the boot problem then disappears, then it is probably a FSB setting.

I had the same problem with an C2Q9450 which I overclocked to 3,2 GHz. Until I used a strap that was the same as the CPU default FSB (333 MHz).
So you might want to experiment with the A, B, C or D straps if you haven't already done so.

                      Good luck.

                        Im using 2.40B strap.
If I put strap on auto it sets it to 1000mhz speed while the stock speed is 800.
Will it be ok on auto?

                            Re: UD3R boot question

not tested it on auto yet as I need to wait till its a cold boot before I know if its still doing the same thing.

                            Im at 333 x 9 atm for 3ghz
                            should I change to 400 x 8?
What voltages would I need to increase for that to be stable?
Its on 1.331 vcore atm with everything else is on normal apart from RAM voltage, RAM strap and latency settings.
