  • EP-45-DS3R + OCZ Reaper 2x2GB = weird stuff

    Hi everyone,
finally found a proper place to address my case ;]

So like 2 weeks before I bought the ep45-ds3r gigabyte mobo and a matching pair of ocz reapers 2x2gb 5-5-5-15 @ 2.2v.

Everything went smooth at the beginning and then **** hit the fan ;/

First I was experiencing some weird Vista x64 BSOD's, well I though it's microsoft so it probably needs to bsod once in a while, but while I dug deeper I knew that it's a hardware problem.

First started to use memtest86+ 3.5 with both sticks of ram in 1&3 seatings and the program was restarting, bad ram I thought.

Started to test the sticks separatly one at a time in bank 1.

One was ok to pass 3 loops of test.
The second one was just starting to get errors when the test started.

    Bad RAM I thought.

But when I started to experience the same old problem (bsod's) on the "good" stick things got worse and vista x64 didn't even boot.

memtest on the "good" stick, same story ****load of errors right from start.

But then my cousing rang me and said to try to reseat the RAM sticks, so I put them into 2&4 banks, things work wonderful !

Memtest started on both RAM (it was reseting earlier) and everything was starting to look sweet and awsome.

Later on I had another vista bsod sth about memory_management, so I went to memtest them again.

But then I left the memtest to run thru the whole night, and when I got up today the timer was frozen on like 2h and had couple of errors (3-4).

    Please help me :D

Bios setting are all on auto/default, only thing I changed was the voltage for my rams (2.2 on the box, but 2.1 was stable, was...).

My other parts are a Intel C2D E8400 (stock settings, still waiting for my new cpu cooling to be avilable), a BFG Geforce GTX 285 (all stock settings), an OCZ 600W PSU, and a 1TB samsung spinpoint F1.

If you need more specs, info or anything just write and I'll post whatever you need ;]

    Re: EP-45-DS3R + OCZ Reaper 2x2GB = weird stuff

Please try the RAM at DDR2 800. If that works we can be sure that this is not jsut a compatability issue and try to find the right settings to make this work at 1066 MHz.

Can you try the RAM on any other motherboard and see if they run at 1066 Mhz there?

This could be a number of things but trying the RAM at DDR2 800 is the first thing you should do as it eliminates many possible causes (like the PSU).

Yep loosen ram timings, like PL(static tRead) to like 10 for now. Also what MCH core are you using? Try 1.22v and then retest memtest both sticks, just loop test #7 for at least 3 passes.

If you get errors, lower MCH ref, 1st try .74v with PLL on 1.20, then go lower. When OC'ing most dual cores seem to like .68-.70v mch ref but normally when pushing higher fsb and higher MCH voltage.

Also maybe before anything you can try swapping the sticks order, meaning the stick thats in slot 1 goes to slot 3 and 3 to 1. This sometimes works wonders for some reason.

        Re: EP-45-DS3R + OCZ Reaper 2x2GB = weird stuff

I would be testing one stick at a time, in slot one at stock MANUALLY set Main timings, and ram voltage with Memtest86+ 2.11 >>>
Memtest86+ - Advanced Memory Diagnostic Tool

Please let the test run a full 5 passes on each stick

As for your settings, as said above you do need to make some changes for sure. 2x2 will often not work in Auto very well at all.

After you do your single stick tests with the above program I can help you with all settings, please fill this out with what you are using so I know where we stand CPU/FSB-wise and I will advise back >>>

This is Just a template I use to ask people their settings, pay no attention to the numbers in it, replace with yours
