  • Tweaking a Gigabyte GA-EP45-UD3P and OCZ Reaper OCZ2RPR800C44GK

I have been frequenting this forum throughout my build process to answer numerous questions, and solve many problems as well. Thanks to the great users and info. available, I finally have everything up and running smooth. Now, I feel its time to venture into the realm of OC'ing. My main questions is if someone might be able to recommend a few bios settings to help me OC my CPU and Ram. My CPU is an Intel Core 2 Duo E8500 Wolfdale 3.16GHz with 8GB of OCZ Reaper OCZ2RPR800C44GK. I am looking for help in what settings to change in the bios, and what values to change them to. The revision of my processor is E0, which I have read is the newer revision, and supposedly a better OC as well. Hopefully some one has some insight to share to help me along the way. Thanks.

I would recommend that before you start overclocking your system, that you test the RAM with memtest 2.11 Memtest86+ - Advanced Memory Diagnostic Tool first.

Seeing that you are using 8GB of RAM which can be more difficult to setup sometimes, even at stock speeds - it's good practice to make sure all is well with memtest before you start to overclock. At least if you do run into problems whilst overclocking, you have always a known good base setting to return to.

If you wish you can always use F11 in the bios to save your own custom bios setup/s and F12 to recall them. This is useful if you want to save a selection of known good setups, say from a modest overclock to a high overclock.

Thanks for the info. I am running the memtest 2.11 program right now. I will report back with the results. Thanks.

OK, all is well. I ran memtest 2.11 for over 24 hours without a single error. I feel that should be sufficient. With that complete, am I now able to proceed to OC the Memory, and CPU? If so, any help in settings, values, etc. is greatly appreciated, as I am unsure of all the settings presented in the bios. Thanks.

Because your Ram is rated at 800Mhz, rather than say 1066+ etc, it might be a too bigger jump incrementing your memory multiplier.

At present your memory multiplier will be at 2.40x, ie 2.40 x 333 = 800Mhz.
Your next available multiplier might be 3.00x or 3.20x.
If say the next memory multiplier available is 3.00x, then 3.00x x 333 = 1000Mhz (999), which may be too high for your ram, especially considering the amount installed.

Your next option and probably the best, is to overclock "everything". So it's the Cpu Host Frequency ie 333Mhz that gets incremented.

For Example a Cpu Host Frequency of 350Mhz, would:-

          a) Memory = 350 x 2.40 = 840Mhz
          &
          b) Cpu = 350 x 9.5x = 3.325Ghz (9.5x multiplier default for e8500)
          or
          c) Cpu = 350 x 9.0x = 3.150Ghz (ie nearer the normal CPU frequency)

You can reduce the CPU multiplier by 0.5x units using the Cpu Fine adjustment.
