  • Gigabyte EP45T-UD3P random freeze

    Hi,
I just bought a new system and it is killing me ever since.
The PC is Freezing randomly. No blue screen and no pattern( like only in games or in certain applications). Sometimes it freezes with a strange sound in the speakers or with no power to my usb mouse. It can run for a whole day or it can freeze 10 times in one hour.

I tried the PSU on another PC it is ok
I tested the ram (8 hours memtest) ok
I tried to change the Videocard... same freezes
I tested the HDD with Wd diagnostics and other software... ok

The only weird thing that can be mentioned is the +12v. In ET6 and in BIOS it appears correctly. In everest, PC wizzard and Speedfan does not go past 2v

Please help me because i am out of ideas and it's such an annoing problem from a new system

    My specs:
    Mainboard : Gigabyte EP45T-UD3P
    Chipset : Intel P45
    Processor : Intel Core 2 Duo E8500 @ 3166 MHz
    Physical Memory : 4096 MB (2 x 2048 DDR3-SDRAM )
Video Card : Gainward ATI Radeon HD 4850 1GB Golden Sample
Hard Disk : WDC (640 GB)
    PSU: CorsairTX 650 W

    Thx in advance

What are you running your DDR3 at, voltage and frequency wise?

    What OS are you using?
    GA-P35C-DS3R Rev2.0 F11 bios, E8200 (@3.0Ghz), OCZ DDR3 PC3-10666 Reaper 4GB (@1200Mhz), Xonar D1, 8800GTS 512, Corsair HX520 (Single 12volt line, Max 40A), WDC 3200aaks/5000aaks in AHCI mode, Vista 64 Premium.

      hy

My DDR3 is running at 667Mhz at 1.5v i think
I am using Windows XP pro.

But I hope i'm having some breakthrough here. I just realized that i have a memory that is not supported by the motherboard. at least that is what i understand...
      my memory
      http://www.ec.kingston.com/ecom/co [...] K2/4G&id=2

      My motherboard
      http://www.gigabyte.com.tw/Product [...] uctID=2936

      The motherboard supported memory list:
      http://www.gigabyte.com.tw/FileLis [...] t-ud3p.pdf

Is it possible that the system freezes can ocurr if my motherboard does not support the memory?

      Thx in advance.

Often, memory isn't listed on the manufacturers QVL list. However that probably says more towards they didn't get a chance to test it with other brands, rather than your memory being unsuitable.

In most cases, more fine adjustment in the bios is required for some memory products.

        For starters,
I suggest you run at least 1 pass of memtest Memtest86+ - Advanced Memory Diagnostic Tool
Download the zipped up ISO file, unzip and burn the Image to a CDr/w etc. Make sure your Cd/dvd drive is the first bootable device in the bios

          Re: Gigabyte EP45T-UD3P random freeze

Bunny I wish I saw your post before I would have just made my new one here. I crash with the same board also. When I was running Rivatuner and graphics my Local Video Memory and Video Memory, my 512 card was asking for 720mb!

Run rivatuner in the background monitoring your Video Memory and Local Video memory. :D! Please, you are the only other post i've found with this board

Only crashes on certain games but I get patterns and skewd textures

            Re: Gigabyte EP45T-UD3P random freeze

            Thebunny,
I've exactly the same CPU and RAM and got the same random freezes.
            It is NOT even overclocked.
My graphics - Gainward 8800GT later changed to XFX 9600GT (no stability with both)
HDD Samsung 160GB + 400GB both in simple IDE mode, 1 SATA Optiarc 7200S DVD burner plus 1 IDE Plextor PX-708A DVD burner.
Looks like our GA-EP45T-UD3P board is very unpopular. I've got it RMAed but it was
returned back as being ok. None of the BIOSes from v.F2 to v.F6 works with the default settings (Optimized of Fail-Safe). I've set performace level to Standard, PCI-e frequency to 100MHz. MCH voltage to 1.2 - 1.3V, DDR voltage to 1.5V but no stability. In fact I was able to stabilize it somehow with the above settings for 2 weeks but the problem came back to bite me :(
Memtest (latest) never failed and Prime95 (latest) was ok running for 5-6 hours!
Isn't it funny. So I thought the PSU is failing (CoolerMaster RealPower 850W) but
was tested OK on another PC. Got rid of the UPS just in case - no luck.
            Naturally I went after the DDR3 (Kingston ValueRAM KVR1333N3D9 2x2GB 1333MHz
            9-9-9-24 1.5V - manufactured by Elpida).
Looks like the BIOS picks up all timings right on auto - they're exactly as per specs.
BUT the voltage is always set to 1.76V (so reported in BIOS PC Health and in Everest 5.00). Any attemt to manually set it to 1.5V is simply ignored in the BIOS.
I mean it retains the setting DDR Core Voltage = 1.5V but gives 1.76V nevertheless.
This RAM is supposed to run at 1.5V only!
And yes I've flashed many times using QFlash with clearing DMI data, loading Optimized defaults + save and rebooted before first boot to Windows XP SP3.
Because I'm nowhere near stability with this board and RAM the only last thing to do is to ask: HTF to make DDR core voltage 1.5V to stick?

Sorry forgot to mention my CPU is Intel Core 2 Quad Q9550 rev.E0 @ 2.83MHz
and it's working fine on another system.

                Re: Gigabyte EP45T-UD3P random freeze

                Thebunny,
Did you check your DDR core voltage? Maybe I've found the culprit after all.
Looks like the newest BIOS F6 downloaded from here AND NOT F6A downloaded from GB's site has addressed the issue. Now 1.5V holds steady. I've immediately noticed some stability improvement and will do long Prime95 run. That DDR3 overvoltage to 1.76V probably was ok for PC under stress testing, but introduced instability in idle!
Thinking of that - almost all the time these freezes occur while I'm not doing anything on the PC. That could explain why memtest & prime95 do not fail !!!
Furthermore I've seen video encoder frozen right on between encoding passes and that's the time when the load drops and then boom - freeze.
