  • Looking for E8200 + GA-EP45-DS3L overclocking advice

I've recently built a new system using the following:

    E8200 2.66Ghz
    GA-EP45-DS3L
    Crucial Ballistix Tracer 2GB (2x1GB) DDR2 PC2-8500C5 1066MHz
Arctic Cooling Freezer 7 Pro CPU Cooler

I have pretty much no experience with overclocking, but advised by a friend have managed to clock to 3.5ghz which seems to be stable. 3.2 and 3.4Ghz both ran Prime 95 fine for about 6 hours, and I've tested 3.5Ghz for about 3hrs. Max core temps were 57c in Real Temp (62c in HWMonitor). I then decided to try and push things further, but the system either fails to POST or boot Windows at 3.6Ghz. Heres my current BIOS settings:

    MB Intelligent Tweaker(M.I.T.)
    Robust Graphics Booster ...............: Auto
    CPU Clock Ratio ..........................: 8
    Fine CPU Clock Ratio.....................: 0.0
    CPU Frequency ...........................: 3.50

    Standard Clock Control
    CPU Host Clock Control..................: [Enabled]
CPU Host Frequency (Mhz) ............: 438Mhz
PCI Express Frequency (Mhz) .........: 100

    (G)MCH Frequency Latch...............: [Auto]
    System Memory Multiplier ..............: 2.00 D
    Memory Frequency (Mhz) ..............: 876Mhz

    DRAM Timing Selectable ................: [Manual]

    Standard Timing Control
    CAS Latency Time........................5
    tRCD .........................................5
    tRP'...........................................5
    tRAS..........................................15

    CPU Enhanced Halt (C1E)................: [Disabled]

    x C4/C4E State Support..................: [Disabled]
CPU Thermal Monitor 2(TM2) ...........: [Enabled]

I believe with the temps I'm currently getting I could push the chip a bit further, but I don't really know how to proceed from here or how suitable the settings I'm using now are, so any help would be much appreciated.

Spoke to soon about running at 3.5Ghz, just had a BSOD so I've dropped back down to 3.4Ghz for now.

Put Performance Enhance back to standard and put memory multiplyer on 2.4B and try then.

I can advise you of this for now, please set these manually or you are going to KILL your CPU Auto WAY Overvolts them when overclocked>>>

CPU Termination…..... 1.200V*.......: 1.2-1.35 (1.2-1.28 should be good for your clocks
        CPU PLL…………………....1.500V*.......: 1.35-1.5 (Try 1.4-1.5)

Performance Enhance...................: [Extreme] << Use standard

Got a link to your ram, I assume it is the 2.2V version but just want to be sure. What does the sticker say? You may need to use at least 2.1 if they are the 2.2V version

Please fill out your FULL Settings as I need to see them all to best advise you >>>

This is Just a template I use to ask people their settings, pay no attention to the numbers in it, replace with yours

The ram is the 2.0V version, I made sure to check that as the shop I got it from advertised that version as being 2.2V for a short while and caused a few people problems.

Re: Looking for E8200 + GA-EP45-DS3L overclocking advice

I would try using the D strap myself. Or try adding more MCH Voltage to stay on the B strap

It would be much easier for you to use 2.00D until you are done pushing your FSB up there and get it stable then work on your ram. You may need to use tRD 9 for the D Strap

And you may need more vcore then 1.3, what does that give you for actual in CPU-z at idle and load?

Re: Looking for E8200 + GA-EP45-DS3L overclocking advice

CPU-z gives vcore as 1.232 idle and 1.216 max load. I'll switch back to 2.00D for now, and I'm guessing I should just up the vcore by .01 and try a higher FSB?

Re: Looking for E8200 + GA-EP45-DS3L overclocking advice

Well you should get where you are stable before you raise the FSB. That is a large vdrop/vdroop, just keep that in mind when you are finding and setting stable Vcore
