  • Best stress tester for RAM +CPU?

    Hi

I have been overclocking my CPU and using memtest+ and orthos, runns ok for 1 hr. Then run FSX on XP home and within 10 mins at EGLL it freezes and I have to reset PC. Now inertestingly, it never happens if I relax memory timing or set back to default CPU and BISO settings, which would suggest one of 2 things.

None of the above-mentioned do a full job of stressing the CPU + RAM, or FSX with the add-ons of traffic and secenary create too many file read requests that either the HDD cannot keep up with the faster throughput or its getting lost.
I don't know, but it looks like FSX is a better stress tester than either of the above, be it an expensive tester with add-ons. Or FSX is a leaky peice of s/w when you have add-ons and issues arise!!

I wish someone could post a method of setting RAM timing as you overclock the CPU, also I may be contributing to the this issue bacuse I have 2 sets of 2X 1GB RAM modules, they are not matched purchased 3 months apart.

At default memtest says my memory B/W is nearly 5000m/b, if I set timing for each and increase it to 5300m/b I start getting problems with FSX not orthos or memtest, this with with approx FSB 430.

What is the best method forward?

A good allround stress test is the X3 TC Rolling DEMO. It highlighted errors on my system (using Vista) that Prime95 and Memtest didn't.

There are a huge number of posts covering that on this forum.

i ran intel burn test, this made my CPU ran upto a max temp of 66 degrees when overclocked to 434FSB. Is this too high? When using orthos it only went upto 55 degrees.

That test always is hotter 10-20C for sure! And yes, that is fine temp, especially for that test

I would suggest you use the latest Memtest86+ and run 5-10 full passes to be sure, not just a hour >>

I use Orthos myself as well, Blend test. Plenty of Stability programs posted here >>>

Its nice to see you back and best wished for the newyear.

Could you check this overclock and comment. Now at default setting memory B/W was 4970MB/s with this loose timing it is 5054MB/s, I have got it to 5350MB/s my either adjusting to 5-6-6-18 or adjusting static thread but not sure if it stable, what would you expect from my memory normally, though my 4GB is 2 independent 2X 1GB sticks!!!

Re: Best stress tester for RAM +CPU?

Thanks for the kind words! I wish you a Happy New Year as well!!!

You should be able to use 555-15/18 at that speed, and on the B strap you should be able to use 6-8 tRD (Static tRead) have you tried lower MCH Voltage yet? I would start there, maybe 1.22-1.24 and if that works then try lowering your tRD

If 555-15/18 does not work then Likely one of those advanced timings being in Auto is the problem

ok, I will try 1.26 and then look at lowering timings

Re: Best stress tester for RAM +CPU?

I did a quick test to see if I am heading in the right direction. MCH 1.26 seems to be stable.
I changed timings from 5-7-7-24 to 5-5-5-18, nothing else, it took 3 times longer to bring up the windows login screen!!! so put it back, hmmmmm
not sure what to do now, doesn't ever seem to like me putting tighter timing.

Sounds like you should maybe manually set all your timings, Please post a screenshot of what auto is giving you. Use this program Memset >>>

I hope this is what you want.
Note: I have manually set static thread at 9, not sure which is is that, performance level = 9? is that it?

I have got it stable and running at 5-5-5-15 by adjusting some other timing. The mem b/w is now 5300MB/s. I am not sure if I want to adjust anyhting unless there is something that is really out.
