  • EP45C-DS3R Q6700 Stability with Vista 64

I am new to overclocking and need some help with stability.

I originally purchased the Q6700 bundled with an Intel DP35DP board and realized that I had no PS2 ports, FDD, second PCIx16 or Overclocking capability. However, when I vista64 on that setup and it ran fine.

I got the EP45C-DS3R to overcome the above and soon after installing vista was locking up all the time. No BSOD, just lock-ups. I started to investigate and it seemed that I needed to test the memory with memtest.

I started with the stock Auto settings on the mobo with all 4 sticks loaded. memtest blew chunks everywhere. I tried one at a time in the first slot and they all passed.

I then read lsdmeasap "just got the name as a typed it" article http://forums.tweaktown.com/f69/memo...vs-bios-27283/

So I tried upping the MCH from 1.8 to 1.9, then 2.0, 2.1, up to 2.2 no dice. Also upped the tRFC from 42 to 48, 50, 60, 70. no luck.

I finally took everything back to stock Auto and set the memory mhz to 667 and memtest ran fine for an hour or so.

Question #1: I bought more expensive 800mhz ram and had to downgrade to 667. Does this make sense? sucks, but if that is the way it is, it is fine.

Question #2: What should be the settings to get this to go up to 3.0 or 3.2? I mainly use as a HTPC, Photo/Video editing and general purpose PC. I have a PowerColor HD4830 GPU with HDMI output. No real games, as of today.

Question #3: After I pass memtest, what other test should be run to be more sure that my setup will not freeze in vista?

    Thanks in advance.

what kind of ram do you use ?? what is your ram voltage ?? what trap do you use ??266, 333, 400 ?? .... what divider do you use ??? 2.0 , 2.6 ect...
how much over clock did you do ?
basicly we need more info so can help you out.
but for starter .. when have all 4 ram populate ... need more voltage in vcore, MCH and VTT too ... some time need to loosing up the timing little ... in general you some time need to undeclock your ram when use 4 . ... but give use more spect will help you out

Yes, please link your ram and tell us how much you are using. Also what BIOS you are using

MCH 1.8+? That is way to much, and not stated anywhere. Hopefully you mean ram voltages, and 1.8+ may also be bad if you are using DDR3!

You can run your ram at 800+ you just need the correct settings. For sure while you wait, set performance enhance to standard!

      I use Memtest86+ >>>
Memtest86+ - Advanced Memory Diagnostic Tool

      And Orthos >>>
      Orthos_20060420.zip

But there are MANY benchmark and stress test utilities out there. Here is a "Few" in this thread (See post #3) >>>

Fill this out with what you are trying to run that fails and I will advise, and I will also post you a 3.2 set of settings

This is Just a template I use to ask people their settings, pay no attention to the numbers in it, replace with yours

Here is what I have now. Previously, I was just trying to get the Auto settings to work. I had to lower to 667 to get 4 DIMM's to work.

3.0 would be nice without the extra heat

            Da mn... Is that 4x2=8GB

Please link me to the exact ram, I need to be sure of voltage warrantied before I advise you. But I can see now you are not setting your voltage, you need to do that and add MCH voltage. But you have MANY incorrect settings for more then 2x1Gb so please link me to your ram and I will post back suggested settings for 3Ghz for ya

                Re: EP45C-DS3R Q6700 Stability with Vista 64

It appears that with Vista and the way it now manages memory compared to Windows XP, is that it maps programs differently into memory. Apparently it does this as a "security" feature, so programs aren't always found at the same location etc.
Because of this, poorly setup Ram and/or faulty Ram may have never come to light on an XP system, as it may have never or been rarely used.

Address space layout randomization - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

So basically the more Ram you equip your board with, the more tweaking that needs to be done to make sure all of it is stable.

You may even find that 667Mhz is the most you'll be able to run your ram at without errors when using 8GB.
It may not be a limitation of any Ram you buy, but more of a Ram/Board limitation, specifically when using 8GB.

Hopefully though if you have absolutely no errors with Memtest now at 667Mhz, you might be able to get better Ram performance by tweaking.
Do check on the Corsair forums though, as i know that they do suggest that high densities such as 8GB will only run at a lesser speed on some motherboards.

I run 8GB just fine without errors, have even done so with mismatched sticks.

Thanks for that info VorLon! I will be sure to absorb that info

                  @agrohe....

I need a link to your EXACT Ram, you can link me to the page you bought it at that is fine. If not, please follow the link you gave me above, click specifications and then copy the link that is your ram and post it here

Here is some general 8GB settings for your CPU at 3Ghz, you will have to find your own CPU Voltage, dont use Auto and set it high so you can for sure boot thru. Then you can lower later >>>>

You may need to use 3.2Ghz and 320 FSB so you can use 2.50A multi, but you should be able to use the B multi and be fine. If you get no where with the below suggestions make those mentioned changes

                    Re: EP45C-DS3R Q6700 Stability with Vista 64

Thanks for the settings. I will give them a try sometime over the next few days. Busy getting ready for Thanksgiving, etc.. None of it as fun as overclocking my RAM, but has to be done none-the-less.

I happened to find a good deal ($74/4GB) at my local MicroCenter for the RAM, so I did not buy it online. I will have to pull it out and take a closer look.

I did look at corsair.com and they did not have my RAM on the suppported list for the EP45C-DS3R board.

I guess I should pay more attention to compatibility than the deal of the day.
