Re: GA-X48-DS5 & E8600 - need overclocking help

I RMA's the motherboard with newegg. I will test the ram with this memtest. I did test it with another version of memtest that runs inside windows and it passed that fine (obviously one stick at a time.)
I also ordered an Asus Rampage Formula X48 board. (I can always use one of the motherboard's for a backup computer - since I have lots of parts handy.) I am torn for this critical computer - should I try the GA-x48 again or just give up and go to the Asus?
THANKS.

Re: GA-X48-DS5 & E8600 - need overclocking help

Since my motherboard was sent back as RMA - here is my question:

Can I test 1066 ram (2 X 2gb sticks) running in another computer I have, with the downside being that it just has ram running at 800?

If it works at 800 with no errors, does that mean it is good ram?

THANKS,
AB

Re: GA-X48-DS5 & E8600 - need overclocking help

Well, I would actually suggest a P45 model, it will cost much less and perform just as good as X48, likely much better.

And no, you cannot really rely on a test at 800Mhz, sure if that shows errors then you know they are bad. But if not, you could not assume that until you could test them at 1066 to be sure

Re: GA-X48-DS5 & E8600 - need overclocking help

Hey guys, I'm new here and I need urgent help!
(sorry for bumping the old post)

I need a step by step guide for OCing my E8600 + Gigabyte X48-DQ6, I'm relatively new to Intel hardware esp since I came from AMD background.

Here's my spec:
E8600 3.333ghz
Gigabyte X48-DQ6 (rev... ?)
Patriot Viper Series 8gb (4x2GB modules) DDR 2 1066 - rated 5-5-5-15
HSF: Thermalright True Black 120 + Arctic Cooling F12PWM
PSU: 650W Silverstone ST65F

Average temp:
idle: 23-33C
load: 43-45C

I want to achieve at least 4Ghz, that's the reason I bought this system.
So anyone here can post the best bios setting for me according to my system spec?

Easy.

In the bios, provided that at some point you have actually loaded "optimised defaults" and rebooted to bios at least once,

Re: GA-X48-DS5 & E8600 - need overclocking help

AAArgh you've got 8GB ram. That may require more MCH voltage. I have not done 8GB, settings above are for 4GB. If your 8GB are four matched sticks, rather than two pairs, they have a better chance of being run at rated speeds. Sometimes you have to run four sticks at less than rated speeds. If you do have problems running them all at 1066MHz you may have to use the 2.00D divider for 800MHz

You'll need to download Prime95. With the above settings, and maybe an increment more mch voltage, see if it boots. If the settings are unbootable the board will make a couple of attempts, and then revert to standard settings. Once it boots, run Prime95. If you get "Errors" showing, try next higher MCH until stable.

I think 1.1v is normal, and 1.4 is max (?) for mch, so shouldn't add more than .3 (?)

Did you ever boot into "optimised defaults" setting in bios? If not do it now before doing anything else. Then re-enter your settings and continue.

If you have done that, then Ok. I'm no expert, but, if that was my board, and knowing 8 GB can be more difficult than 4GB, the next thing I'd try is 7-7-7-24 as primary timings, to see if that made a difference.

Normally 400fsb is fairly easy to achieve.

Re: GA-X48-DS5 & E8600 - need overclocking help

Yeah, I always reset back the setting to optimized setting and this time I clear the CMOS (using jumper).

It's really hard to get the system stable,
there is no problem with the heat, I'm using Thermalright True Black - good ventilated case CM HAF922 and air conditioned room.

I've updated the motherboard to BIOS F7 official,
tried to overclock again to 3.6ghz (by reducing multipler to 9.0 - 400FSB - 2.00D divider - Using voltage setting that everyone recommended here) and it's still freeze everytime I tested it with Prime 95 - Small FTT test - around 15mins.

Help me!

ps: should I loosen the ram timing? advice?
