  • EP43-DS3 Overclocking Problems

Hello from a new member of these forums.

    My specs are:

    EP43-DS3 (Bios F8)
    E2160
    4 x 1 PC6400 Ballistix (2 sticks older, 2 sticks new due to RMA)
    Sapphire X1950 Pro
    Corsair 620w psu
Arctic Cooling Freezer Pro with AS5

I used the above in my now replaced (RMA) P35C DS3R and got the chip to 3g and ram to 1000m very easily and this was stable for nearly a year, until the board and one stick of ram died, hence the new mobo and 2 sticks of new ram, which I assembled about 2 weeks ago.

Until yesterday, I was able to get the chip at 2.7g and was able to play games easily, but when I restart, the system either went into a loop and when I was able to get into bios, it would come up with the red warning message, so I saved the settings again and it would either loop again, or after numerous tries, it would eventually boot into Vista x64.

Today, with the settings below, it now loads up at the stock 1.8g and 800 ram settings and no matter how many times I've tweaked the settings, it will only boot at stock.

I've tried booting with just the old and then the new ram fitted, the same thing happens.

I hope the above makes sense, as I've been out of the overclocking scene for a while.

    Re: EP43-DS3 Overclocking Problems

Sorted the problem out, it was all down to a faulty memory slot, once that is vacated, 3g was no problem whatsoever, looks like RMA time.

The problem has now resurfaced, after I've reseated the cpu/hsf, tried all variations of memory placement and now I can only get it to boot safely at stock, is this board a back overclocker?

      Re: EP43-DS3 Overclocking Problems

Static tRead Value should match for both channels with 4GB (2x2) and should be 7-10, what you have is way to low so that is likely your issue. You may also need 1.25-1.3 for MCH voltage

2 Older and 2 Newer Crucials are not the same modules and should not be used together. So you either need to RMA the other set so you have both matching new ones, or RMA the new set you have and tell them you need the older type, they will send you the older type if you ask for them and they still have some. If they are now out, you will just HAVE to RMA the other set. What it is that the older ones are double sided modules and the new ones are single sided. So different IC chips between them and they will not work together properly

Also, you should be using the 333 or 400 MCH Latch

A double reboot is normal, a triple reboot back to stock just means setting were wrong. Aside from that your settings look OK. If you would like some suggested ranges once you have matching modules let me know or look around for 4x1 and you can find plenty or I can post for you

What BIOS are you using? In the mean time, just use 2 sticks so you can have a stable system. Older or newer does not matter.

        Re: EP43-DS3 Overclocking Problems

        Thanks for the reply.

I've tried both sets of memory, in both dual channel slots and I've still got the same problem.

I've taken the battery out, placed it back and loaded optimised settings, then altered them, no joy.

I was using F8 and have now used F7 and nothing has changed, minutes of looping, even when at stock.

Bored of this now, RMA time.

          Re: EP43-DS3 Overclocking Problems

Sounds to me like maybe both sets of ram have a bad stick maybe, does one stick of either (Working ones that you know of) work ok in slot one?

Auto or Default settings could likely also be wrong, for either set. If you are not already taking it apart and Would like to try with some help then post me back your settings with the 2 sticks you tested to be ok before installed in 1+3 and I will post back some better values for you to try. As I said above, a few of those settings you posted are off, for 2x1 or 4x1, so you would likely always have issues. Especially with Static tRead so low >>>>

            Re: EP43-DS3 Overclocking Problems

Thanks for your help mate, it's just getting me down now and I must have spent the vast majority of the last 3 days trying to sort this out and I'm not working this week either. I've an RMA sorted, but if I can get this working, I'd rather go that route after all this grief.

I've two sticks in the 2nd and 4th slots and have booted in at 2.7 at the moment.

I will need to get some more ram anyway, as 2g won't be enough and I've heard Geil/G.Skill/OCZ are the best option, would any of their PC6400 suffice?

Here's my latest settings on bios F8:

For Gigabyte Boards the better choices are Mushkin (MY Top Suggestion, Blue or Black Models) then G.Skill (Ending in Q Or K << Best), then Geil.

              Try this for 2 stick @ 800Mhz

                Re: EP43-DS3 Overclocking Problems

Tried those settings, using both sets of ram in both dual channels and constant looping, followed by booting into stock happened again.

I'll get some different ram this week and try that, then if that doesn't work, I'll have to RMA, I think.

                Cheers mate.

                  Re: EP43-DS3 Overclocking Problems

Well it is for sure the ram, I'd stick to one or the other set for stability until you can get matched pairs or more compatible ram whichever you decide to do

You did notice those settings are for only 2x1 correct? Or did you mean you tried both sets separately?

They would need to be for sure set different for 4x1. But I advise against the mix you have anyway as they are for sure different IC chips on each set

                    Re: EP43-DS3 Overclocking Problems

I did realise that setting was for two matched sticks mate, but had problems with each set on each dual channel, hence me getting some more ram.

I've also got a cheap E6750 to try as well, now we're see if there's a problem.

Pity I didn't realise the new sticks weren't compatible in the first place, oh well.

Ahh, Ok! Just wanted to make sure you saw that. What ram you getting?

Cheap 6750? Isnt that better then the E2160, I would think so. Either way, I doubt it is a CPU issue just the ram

                        Re: EP43-DS3 Overclocking Problems

I've now got my E6750 installed, but I'm still using 2x1g Ballistix until the new ram turns up (both old and new sets at separate times, so I don't think both can be causing the problem) and am having the same troubles as before.

If I do manage to get in at 3.2g, it'll always revert to stock upon restart, after failing to boot, no matter what volts I've tried, from Auto up to 1.45v, with the NB from 1.1v to 1.3v and ram from Auto to 2.1v.

In Easytune, the readings state anything from 1.280 in cpu volts, to 1.370 volts, with the temps from 36 idle to 50 idle and when I use Coretemp, it states 58 idle.

I've never experienced these problems before, in my old DS3R mobo and previous mobo's, if it booted, then it was fine from then on, without the need to alter memory timings, nor the volts in most cases, especially when getting 3g out of my old E2160, but this mobo is either faulty, or the worst overclocker I've ever bought and my last Gigabtye at this rate.

Two cpu's, two sets of ram and still no stable overclock in over 3 weeks, this is tedious now.

I'll probably wait until I get some new ram, after being conned on the bay for some and if I still have the same problem, then that's it.

                          Re: EP43-DS3 Overclocking Problems

Well 1.45 in the BIOS will only be about 1.38 or so actual, your chip may need more then that. I used to have a Xeon 3075, same as E6750 and For me to run 3.4 I had to use 1.425 actual so you may just need a bit more volts

Crucial May be the issue, but not so sure with that chipset. Will it at least pass a few memtest86+ passes?

Easytune shows CPU temp, coretemp shows coretemps. They are different things for sure. And a 58C idel core temp is not so good. You sure you have the heatsink fully screwed on? And not to much paste?

Please just so I can see where you are post your full settings for the 6750 and I will see if I see anything off >>>
