  • Newbie question.....

I have my flame suit on in case I need it, but I have just finished assembling my machine, and I fired it up expecting to hear beeps. Heard none. Realized I don't have an onboard speaker. So busted into an old box and rescued the speaker from oblivion, and plugged it in, hopefully with the correct polarity? (red + / black -)?? Fired up the machine and no beeps.

I have an ATI Radeon X1900XT card onboard that was given to me as a gift from a friend who couldn't get it to work on his Mac Power PC. So in reality I have no idea if it is worth anything. Obviously there is no native video on the mobo, so how would I know if the video card is working? And if it is, having not gotten far enough along to install drivers, how will this card speak to my monitor (it's all VI, no VGA)

I'm just a little lost at the moment.
Thanks in advance for any help.

    Re: Newbie question.....

Hi Ransx77, don't be such a loser. Pull that 11 year old PCI ATI RageII VGA graphics card out of that old box over there, yeah the one you got the speaker from, and plug it in. Remove the ATI Radeon card of course. Now run the VGA cable to your monitor you dork and turn the box on and see if it beeps!!

Thanks Ransx77, I did as you suggested, or demanded, I should say, and when I booted the new box I got a single short beep, and the GIGABYTE screen displayed on the monitor and I was able to setup the Bios and save it.

Now I have to try to remember how to format a Hard Drive from DOS.....sheeesh! Got any ideas on that one smarta$$????

            Hey Ransx77, you schmuck!
You don't need to format that new 640gb DD in DOS. Use that XP Pro SP2 disk that came with your laptop, stick it in the DD drive and fire the beast up. Select the CD for booting and away you go. XP will force you to format the HDD.

Sorry if you are not amused sir, perhaps you can change the channel? All I'm doing here is blogging my progress. If I ask a question and stumble on the answer myself, I figured I should let the board know I kinda found the answer to that problem. I did so with some humor, sorry it bugs you.

Once again, you are a schmuck. Didn't you read the instructions that you need to install it in a raw partition??? DUH! Now go back and delete the partition, select "C" and follow the instructions, and read them this time, will ya????
