Re: Pre-Overclocking Temps at idle before I attempt overclocking

Harsh. Very harsh. Hamburgers, not pizza.

There are currently 5 (not 4) HDD in my computer (not including the SSD, which is mounted behind the MB plate), each one separated by an empty HDD tray.
I would imagine SOME air is getting past the HDD enclosures, (due to the gaps between the drives) but not a hell of a lot probably.

I intend to reduce that to one HDD and remove the middle HDD bay enclosure. Just need to figure out which actual physical HDD is the one I want to leave behind.

Currently looking at whether I can hotswap internal SATA drives, there seems to be some confusion whether you can or not.

Re: Pre-Overclocking Temps at idle before I attempt overclocking

Nice job diagnosing the video card, my bet was on a loose heatsink on the card.

Now the question is, do you really need all the extra cooling you added to solve the video card heat issue? Sometimes more is not always better, as in adding a fan to every spot you can, not that you did that for no reason.

I will say your HDDs all have good temps, although the one ST2000DM is at 36C and another is at 26C, and the ST4000DM is at 35C. Again, not bad temps at all, but are those warmer drives in the middle of the bay, or at the top? Just curious.

One thing I think is curious is in the GPU temps in your last screenshot, which you said was in XFire, correct? I don't know if the labels being used are correct, but we can see GPU Diode at 75C (which I assume is the GPU chip itself, and GPU VRM1 at 75C, GPU VRM2 at 26C.

I guess you can't get both video cards to show their temps at the same time, is that right? I was wondering if the GPU VRM1 and GPU VRM2 temps are for one card, or for both cards, as in one temp for each. If for one card, the GPU VRM2 must be for the memory chips, while GPU VRM1 must be for the video chip itself.

      No big deal, just curious.

Re: Pre-Overclocking Temps at idle before I attempt overclocking

The ST2000DM-9YN164, the ST4000DM and the 2 x WDC are all external drives, in their own enclosures. I actually have 10 discrete drives attached to the computer. 1 x SSD, 5 x internal HDD, 4 x external HDD.

Under XFire, AIDA will only report the single GPU. If I disable XFire, AIDA reports on both GPU separately.
Under XFire, Furmark will only report one at a time.

I would have to assume you are correct on what the program is saying.

Re: Pre-Overclocking Temps at idle before I attempt overclocking

You can run GPU-z to display information for each card.
You might be able to run 2 instances of CPU-z at the same time, one for each card.
          That will make screen-shots easier.

HWiNFO64 freeware should also do the same thing and it includes quite a bit of optional, user selected system information.

Re: Pre-Overclocking Temps at idle before I attempt overclocking

Ah yes, HWiNFO64 to the rescue! Lots of info, I know but it looks fine. Well... the GPU voltage in looks a bit low, at 11.563V, if that is the PSU 12V rail into the video card. Seems to be out of ATX spec. My '760 does not show those voltages so I can't check myself.

Regarding being patient, believe me, you never gave us less than the info we needed, or ignored requests. That makes it easy, you were not a problem at all. Patience was never a factor, you should see some threads...

Re: Pre-Overclocking Temps at idle before I attempt overclocking

Well, I now have a new configuration, at least partly, after 3 hours of frigging around.

Removed 3 of the HDD from the case, and then removed the middle HDD enclosure (and don't ask what other major problems I had!!). Still running the XFire video cards.

                For cooling, I now have:
2 x 140mm front fans, pushing air into the case, both plugged into the motherboard itself. The bottom of the two is mostly obstructed by the bottom HDD enclosure, which has 2 drives in it (with an empty mount space between them). The top fan of the two is not obstructed at all now.
1 x 120mm bottom fan, pushing air into the case, plugged into the motherboard.
1 x 120mm side fan, pushing air into the case, run off direct power from the PSU
2 x 140mm top fans and 1 x 140mm rear fan, all exhaust, all plugged into the fan controller that is part of the Define R4 case.

Very tempted to change this around, by removing the side/bottom fans, changing the rear one to pushing air IN to the case instead of extracting it and leaving the two at the top extracting.

Re: Pre-Overclocking Temps at idle before I attempt overclocking

                  More food for thought:

My CM 690 case only has one large hard drive cage and there is only one internal hard drive in my computer case. To provide better air flow, I removed the drive cage and my solo hard drive sits on two sticks, 1/4" above the bottom of the case. My case has a single 120mm front fan, one bottom mounted fan, 2 side mounted fans, 2 top mounted fans and 1 rear panel fan. The front, bottom and side panel fans provide air intake and the top and rear fans exhaust the heated air.

Summary: 4 fans for air intake and 3 fans for exhaust.
My Seidon 120XL AIO water cooler is installed in my HAF XB case.

If an exhaust fan cannot deflect two sheets of dangling TP to at least a 45 degree angle from vertical, or an intake fan cannot suck two sheets of TP onto the fan intake, then the air flow is inadequate.

profJim, what is your reference brand of TP?

Since we seem to be clarifying .......

Is one to assume this is to be accomplished using fresh off the roll, dry and FMF, sheets?
#1 - Please, when seeking help, enter the make and model of ALL parts that your system is comprised of in your Signature, or at least the model #'s in your System Specs, then "Save' it.
____If you are overclocking, underclocking, or undervolting any parts, informing us of this and their values would prove beneficial in helping you.

#2 - Consider your PSU to be the foundation from which all else is built upon. Anything built upon a weak foundation is poorly built.

Making assumptions can be dangerous but I'm going to assume that certain members have a good sense of humor.

Q: profJim, what is your reference brand of TP?
A: Any 2-ply, scented, quilted brand that I have.

Q: Is one to assume this is to be accomplished using fresh off the roll, dry and FMF, sheets?
A: Use whatever makes you happy. FMF? flow microfluorometry?

Parsec said "Filters restrict air flow a lot, at least 50%."
This sounds high but it might be true.

The attached picture isn't quite what I have in mind, but it shows the fan's airflow.

An oversight on my part, I should have mentioned that my TP and TP Holder are compatible with all three DDR modes.
