  • ASRock 990FX Extreme3/FX-8120 with server 2008 R2

    Hello All,

I have tried to search around the forums, but have not had any luck locating someone with the same issue. I have a brand new build with an ASRock 990FX, AMD FX-8120 (not OC) and 16 GB RAM. I have installed server 2008 R2 to set up as my home test server while working on certifications. I have had server 2008 R2 running poorly since early March. The OS continuously stops responding and makes it almost impossible to use. While looking at performance monitor, reliability monitor, and task manager, they all are clean and show almost nothing in terms of resource utilization. And reliability monitor shows nothing because no programs are truly locking - only not responding .

Everything does eventually start working again, but it is intermittent (sometimes it works for 10 seconds cleanly, or sometimes up to 5 minutes). Does anyone have any thoughts on troubleshooting? I have tried new hard drives thinking it could have been an old failing drive(s). I have tried 4-80GB drives (Basic), and I am currently trying 1-80GB drive for OS, 3-80GB drives in RAID5. Any feedback you can provide would be greatly appreciated!!

With the limited information you supplied I'd try running with 1 RAM module first.

You really need to create a sig and list more of the components in your build like -
    RAM - make & model
Power Supply - make & model

    Kingston HyperX Blu 8GB KHX1600C9D3B1K2/8GX

I apologize for the ambiguity. Here is the hardware in the system:

RAIDMAX Blade ATX-298WBP Black Steel / Plastic ATX Mid Tower Computer Case 500W Power Supply (stock powersupply with the case)
      ASRock 990FX Extreme3
AMD FX-8120 Zambezi 3.1GHz (stock cooler)
      2x CORSAIR Vengeance 8GB (2x4GB) CMZ8GX3M2A1600C9B
      Windows Server 2008 R2

The video card is an older (but functional) x1300 Radeon card

Ok - after a bunch of playing around and extensive memory tests, I finally found the issue. The x1300 video card was not compatible with my build of server 2008 r2. I replaced it with a used quadro 420 NVS and everything is running like a dream. Server boots in a matter of seconds. It is finally acting like I THOUGHT it was supposed to. Thanks!
