  • Extreme 3 2700k new build EXTREMELY SLOWWWW

I just put together a new box for folding:

    Asrock Extreme 3 Gen 3 (bios 1.30)
    2700k
    Noctua NH-D14
    2x4gb ram G.SKILL F3-17000CL11D-8GBSR (installed in A2 and B2)
    CORSAIR HX750
    SAMSUNG Spinpoint F3 HD103SJ
    Old Microsoft PS2 mouse
    Old Lite-On USB keyboard
Using onboard video attached via DVI to old
Lite-On SATA DVD burner iHAS 124-04

I intend to install Ubuntu and use the box as a dedicated folding box (folding@home).

The problem is that when I boot the system, it is excruciatingly slow. It takes several minutes to just come up to the UEFI splash screen and from 3-5 minutes just to boot into UEFI (bios). Then, once in UEFI, the mouse or any keyboard inputs take an extremely long time to register, anywhere from 30 seconds to a couple minutes for each input. I have not been able to even get to the point of being able to install an OS. I am far from an expert, but I have built dozens of computers over the past 20 years, so I am also far from a rank beginner. This has me stumped. I have tried to work within the UEFI bios and have tried the default settings, set the memory to XMP, set the Storage SATA Mode to AHCI (tried IDE too). Nothing seems to allow the system to function. The mouse moves very erratically, with a huge delay between input and mouse movement. The same goes for keyboard inputs. Right now I consider the system absolutely unusable. Anybody have any ideas?

already plugged into usb2, not usb3. And the mouse is plugged into the PS2.

1.30 bios is the latest bios listed on ASrock website.

Re: Extreme 3 2700k new build EXTREMELY SLOWWWW

I will try this when I get home, probably this weekend. The issue is that it takes about an hour to make even the simplest changes in bios/uefi, since you have to wait minutes between each input, and it takes minutes to simply navigate the mouse pointer to the item you want to select. Really frustrating.

BTW, which ports do the marvel controller feed? the grey sata 6gb?

The manual does not say anything about the sata controller.

I disabled legacy usb support, made sure my usb keyboard is plugged into the top socket (mouse still plugged into PS2), disabled the USB3 controller, and rebooted. It did help. Now there is only a few seconds (probably up to 10 seconds or so) lag between inputs and results.

I am running memtest86+ right now, although the memory is know good (was in another system running fine even with a healthy overclock).

Re: Extreme 3 2700k new build EXTREMELY SLOWWWW

Disconnect your PSU from A/C power - push the power button a few times to flush any voltages in the capacitors and follow the procedures in your manual to clear CMOS by moving the jumper pin. If after trying this and upon booting when you enter the UEFI and it still is sluggish and not working as designed RMA the board there is something wrong with the UEFI eProm or tracer welds on the board...

Re: Extreme 3 2700k new build EXTREMELY SLOWWWW

I have reset CMOS several times already, with no help. In fact, I will have to do it again so that I can reentry bios to OC. Since I disabled legacy USB in bios, I cannot use the keyboard during boot to enter the bios.

So far I am regretting this ASRock MB purchase. :(

                    Thanks for the help!

SOLVED - Extreme 3 2700k new build EXTREMELY SLOWWWW

I figured out what the problem was. It was either the front case usb connections OR an old legacy media bay card reader/usb that was installed in the 3.5" floppy bay of old case that I used for this build. Both connected to the USB headers on the MB. I disconnected them on a whim and everything is working well in bios/UEFI now. Thanks for your help and patience working through this issue. I was beginning to get really frustrated working with the ASRock Z68 Extreme 3 motherboard, but now that I have it figured out, I am liking it just fine.

Sorry to bump an old thread, but I wanted to make a comment on this, and created an account just to post in case anyone else was having this problem.

I experienced the same symptoms as the OP, except I had absolutely no response from any USB inputs. I suddenly fixed it by unplugging my External HDD. Not sure how that was related, but glad it's gone.
