Today I recieved another fan, and I have 128 more meg of RAM, and a good dustin out, and..... and....... AND GUESS???

took anywhere from 20 mins on, this one writes a whole CD in 2 min and 45 secs. And in two weeks I get the rest of what I need, He's even getting a way bigger hard drive! I don't think I need one, but between my getting upset earlier today, and for the fact that its been due, he says he wants to get one. Well that will just begin saving up parts again I guess.

So now Mr. C what do we deal with now???? finding the hiddin folders and programs?

I so appriciate all the effort and thought proccess that you thunked about it. I sure hope someday I will be able to help someone else out!

Still running somewhat low resources, I mean its only about 10% higher than before, And actually I'm not even using as much more/ or less, less windows open.

K but we want to ask about the bios memory settings, plus about other settings. He would like you to check out the manual for the mother board and compare your notes with his. I guess he's wandering if something is off?

But yes for the most part (85%) it is running very much smoother. Only froze I think twice, but I also put on a memory thingy soas to keep track of it, another temp app. but it works.
And the writer, what a dream!!! I never thunked it could write that fast. And he is ganna get more Ram in two weeks, so for the most part, by the end of the month!!! <img src="http://www.angelfire.com/art2/twizlzone/35_1_.gif"

Fine well and good, but be advised____RAM does not = resources.

On that system (running Windows 98, if I recall correctly :?: ) up to 256Mb of RAM is great.

But don't be mislead into thinking that will increase your available resources -- those are 2 entirely different ballgames I'm afraid.

Don't get caught up in the ol' bigger HDD + more RAM will cure my system woes game. Your system needs a thorough tweak 'n' tune, perhaps some different apps/better drivers, things along those lines are what can possibly contribute to the amount of available resources.

When you talk resources, you speak of coded software stuff, not the hardware in the system. Though, some hardware driver version may in fact use less resources than others, the hardware itself such as RAM, etc. isn't what makes more resources available.

Getting rid of the speaker icon in the tray, not having spybot running except when you are actually using it, keeping the startup apps neat 'n' trim, these are the type of things that can free up resources.

Tweaking isn't always about making the PC more powerful, it's also about taking the available processing power and applying it to things you actually need --- this helps things run smoother and quicker.

Mr. C's got it right. The resources in Win98 are called heaps, and they are finite no matter how much ram you have. Instead of all the technical terms I'll try to use an analogy to explain how this can cause problems, and then you can look for ways to fix them.
There are 3 heaps, but to keep it simple, let's talk about one. When Windows starts up, it fills a bucket with ram (the heap). It doesn't matter whether you fill a bucket from a bathtub or a lake, it still only holds a bucket's worth, and you can't make it any bigger. Each application and process that you start requires some ram from the bucket to contain info for Windows to understand its needs and abilities. Some apps have bigger cups to fill than others. Windows cannot refill the bucket except by rebooting, so if enough gets scooped out, Windows panics, gets confused, and goes haywire. The apps are supposed to play nice and dump their cups back in the bucket when they are done (when you close them), but because of poor coding, some of them don't get it back in the bucket (if you have heard of "memory leaks" that is what this is). If you are monitoring the resources, you can reboot when they get to about 20% and have Windows refill the bucket. You can also watch as you close apps and see if they manage to get their resources back in the bucket. If they do not, use a different app. All of those little icons in the righthand side of the tray after you start up have all dipped into the bucket as they appear. That's why the fewer of them, the better. The ones on the lefthand side are just shortcuts and don't use any resources.

More ram can help you with multi-tasking and in manipulating your graphics (makes the process faster, not better).

I hope this will help you understand what happens to your resources and how you might fix some of the problems. Also hope I didn't overdo it, but I've gotten the impression that you want to learn.

Yes I understand what your saying, and thought I knew enough about the sys tray Icons, but I took off an Icon, which ended up not working properly, and prevented me from going anywhere online....Hence why you havent seen me lately. I didn't know why I couldn't go anywhere, thought It was cookies, but earlier today, I put in that cookies from yahoo and TT are always ok, well that let me check my email, and in there was a message saying..." If you can't see any web pages, this is why" well I put it back (the icon) and ..well here i am.
So what your saying I already know, but yet again, I was shown that even icons can mess things up.
One of the first rules I ever learned was, becarefull of what you delete, remove, relocate because even a simple BMP being missing can _uck things up. Well so is true or even more so with Icons.

But the rest of it, clogging up, I think its cause ATM, I practicly have windows loaded twice, (Windows AND Windows.000)because of the loading up windows with CD ROM support. I'm thinking that My pc is so very confussed. But This is already in progress of being corrected.

A trial version of Zone Alarm Fire Wall.

I've never tried a Fire Wall before, and thought I'd give it a spin, and see what it was like. So far its blocked about 12 things, not sure what they were.

But you must keep the icon on the right for it to work, and to be able to use the web.

I found this out when I was trying to help with saving resources, buy using less icons on right.

Ouch --- I (and many would agree) find a firewall to be essential.

First line of defense for a PC online.

You need to do a bit of research, and get a properly configured firewall in place.


I'm rather baffled as to why you couldn't get to the net without it:?: :confused:

But if having it back in place fixed it, then double-good!

What is this Windows.000?

That system needs to be hosed and reinstalled in a big way.

Now there is the problem! ZoneAlarm is one those firewalls that will block your internet connection if the firewall service is stopped.

In other firewalls you can configure the firewall to block all traffic while the service has not started while in ZoneAlarm this thing is there by default. It hurts isn't it? Alot of times users have experienced same situation when they uninstall ZoneAlarm without setting it properly.

I feel there must be something in the options of ZoneAlarm that deals with this kind of a behaviour. May be a check box or something, which will help you get rid of this problem.

In any case that system needs to be formatted big time and i would advise you to install Sygate Personal Firewall this time rather than ZoneAlarm. Its quite effective in monitoring the traffic and has an inbuilt list of trojans, which will help you if you ever have a trojan on your system.

Interesting, I've never seen this behaviour from ZA.
But from your input and that of others, next time I go looking for a free firewall I will be checking out sygate.

In all honesty ZA has never let me down -- even when disabled.

Yes I've been usin' ZA for years and never experienced that as I will shut it down a lot if I'm havin' an internet prob (turns out to be the ISP's or phone company's prob anyway) but I can still access the web (both the Pro and free versions). :confused:
