  • Odd sharing problem, Win7>WinXP

Ok, just put together a new computer and setting everything up, but I have a problem...

My old comp was a Win7 64-bit Home Premium, as is my new system.
I also have an older laptop with WinXP on it.
My old system had 2 hdd's, a main, and one for storage, with backups, movies, and music, I had the whole secondary drive shared, and could access from the laptop (used to watch movies or play music while working with the main system)

    However:
My new system also has 2 hdd's, a main, and a movie/music/backup storage drive, which is also shared, just like the old one...
My WinXP laptop can access the shared folders on the main drive, but not the secondary drive, which should be completely shared... WTF?
It's shared with everyone, full control, laptop is viewable on the network, laptop shared folders can be browsed from the win7 machine, just not the extra HDD that's supposed to be shared...

    What gives?

    Re: Odd sharing problem, Win7>WinXP

Does XP have a limit with maximum partition sizes that it can access or share?
I never got win7 and win2k to share files, but that might have been due to a win7 defender issue.

Well the HDD it can see is 1TB, and the one it won't share is only 500GB...
Moved all my files to share to the external 1TB HDD and not worrying too much about it, though that's not the way I wanted to do it...

XP File sharing sucks... I have hand my fare share of arguing with it. I have setup 7 computer mixed with xp and windows 7, 2 computer s were win7 and the rest xp. When setting a share maybe 2 xp computers would see it. Maybe after 30min to 1hr another xp computer would see it. Some times rebooting the computer would help.

I believe I could access the share by typing \\servername\sharename\ in windows explorer while the computer\share would not show up in network neighbor hood.
