greyed out workgroup name in W2K and XP?

im trying to change the workgroup name in either a windows 2k or an XP system and the name is greyed out and will not allow me to change it. I need to do so in order to properly connect & set up a cable modem.

Im logged in as admin on both systems, yet cant change it, anyone have any idea's or suggestions?

Im really hoping i dont have to kill and do a clean install all over to correct it.

the network group name is changed thru system propteries network ID

It can be greyed out if it doesn't detect a network card - put your card in and then see if u can change it

another thing that can cause that is if u don't have any protocols installed
