    XP Pro slow boot and black screen before windows launches

    I just redid a laptop with Windows XP Pro. Everything was working
    great and somewhere after I installed a bunch of software and edited
    some services according to blackviper's XP2 service recommendations, windows now boots really slow. It seems like the XP screen with the moving green line takes forever now. I also noticed that it flashes a blank black screen for about 5 seconds after that before windows opens.

    Any ideas what this could be? I cleared the startup folder and turned of zonealarm from launching at startup. I can't figure out what has caused this.

    First thing I would do is go back and reset all the services.

      I went into MSCONFIG and set it to selective bootup and it boots up with normal speed. Can I leave it on selective? or will this cause future problems?

        Not a problem, it just lets you pick and choose what you want to start alongside Windows.
