I assume that you are going to select a 4x8GB kit that is listed as being compatible with your motherboard on the Asus memory QVL list or the memory manufacturer's list.

Not much left to buy. Any miscellaneous items I might need. Only looked at it once, but it looks like there is a slot in front of the case, where you can slide in an extra ssd, and pull out at anytime? Not sure what feature is,

It sounds like you are referring to the external hot swap ssd slot.
On my system I have raid enabled and now don't have the windows option to eject any attached sata drives.

I assume that you've already ordered your memory kit.

Your new cpu cooler should come with a small amount of thermal grease (aka TIM, thermal interface material) but it's always a good idea to have a spare tube just in case you need to remove the cpu cooler in the future. To avoid air bubbles in the thin TIM application, the old TIM needs to be thoroughly removed and then new TIM is applied.

Your new motherboard should come with several new sata cables.

Time now to hurry up and wait.

Have not purchased the memory yet, will do that in a few days when I have a couple days off. Will do the research from your suggested threads. Will take a bit of time. Maybe will just watch some youtube videos on assembling computers and make a stab assembling it myself. Then, no. I'll wait for the knowledgeable friend. There will be plenty to set up and start the computer, that I simply don't know about. I do have one, I believe, M Disc, 3d recorder, player. Do I need a second one? Or anything else that might need to go into another bay?

Building a new system alone for the first time is a very bad idea, especially with an expensive system.
Building a new system with an experienced pc builder at your side is an excellent idea.

You can learn a lot by searching the web for building a pc tutorials and watching several youtube videos.
It will also help to read the hardware assembly portion of your motherboard user manual to get familiar with your motherboard.

ESD (electro static discharge) can damage your motherboard and/or hardware components.
Buying an electro-static mat that is properly grounded is helpful, but there are some steps you can take to manually prevent ESD damage.
You can find instructions on the web that detail how to properly ground an ESD mat and wrist strap.

I always build my system outside of the case with the motherboard resting on a cardboard box next to the computer case with the power supply installed in the case. If you have any cats or dogs in the house close the door and don't let them in!!

Never power on your motherboard with an ESD mat or bag placed under the motherboard.

To simplify trouble-shooting, I first install a minimal hardware setup (cpu, cpu cooler, memory, keyboard and video card/monitor) and make sure that my system can post and boot into the bios.

I never remove or install computer hardware while the power supply is plugged in to the wall outlet.

Your cpu has 2084 tiny cpu pins and it is very easy to bend or break cpu pins if you aren't careful.
Keep in mind that the socket pin area is about 2" by 2".

In this picture the cpu socket is on the left -- the contact pads on the underside of the cpu is on the right.


Spend some time browsing web reviews for your motherboard and pay attention to which memory kits were used and how well the memory kits can be overclocked.

If this happens you have a really big problem.

One of my computer friends will be back in town in a week or two and will let him assemble it. He does computer trouble shooting on the side. So he should know everything. I hope. And I seriously want to thank you for looking out for me. I ordered the processor and water cooler today. So that leaves the memory, which I will take time to study on Monday when I am off work.
On another subject, have you had troubles lately with shockwave flash in firefox letely. Have been using them both for several years, just the other day shockwave stops the page I am on, and I need to stop flash, to continue with the page I am on. Just curious. Again, will have the computer buddy here soon, and he might be able to fix.

Hopefully your new Cooler Master Nepton 240M AIO cpu cooler will fit in your Storm Stryker case without requiring major mods.

I use Comodo IceDragon freeware browser which is based on FireFox: https://www.comodo.com/home/browsers...on-browser.php
The only drawback is that it's based on FireFox 26.0.0.2 and hasn't been updated in quite a while.
I seldom have any issues with the IceDragon browser.

Soon I'm going to do a clean win7 install after I install my 2x250GB Crucial BX100 raid0 ssd's and I'm going to reinstall the latest version of FireFox and Comodo IceDragon along with some of my current programs. Naturally I'll import my saved sessions and bookmarks for each of the browsers. I haven't done a clean win7 reinstall for four years and it's time to get rid of unneeded programs.

I'll probably wait for about 2 or 3 months after win10 is released before I take advantage of the free win7 to win10 upgrade.

ps: I just checked my system and it looks like I never installed flash player or shockwave, I do have java on my system.

Looked at the 4x8 memory. In the 250 to 300 range there seems to be many selections. Do I need more expensive ones? In doing some research in the past couple weeks, read some articles stating faster and more expensive memory is generally not necessary. What company do you like? Went to Corsair, because I have them in a current computer, their Vengence LPX326B, MK32GX4M4A2400C14 seem to work, this is by the Corsair Website. Any thoughts?

Higher rated memory speeds = higher cost.
Fancier memory heat spreaders = higher cost.
Fancy included memory cooling fans = higher cost.

Looking at the memory QVL in your motherboard user manual, the list includes models from 2133MHz, 2400MHz, 2666MHz and 2800MHz.
You want to buy a quad channel kit with four matching modules.
Do NOT buy two dual channel kits.

I suggest checking with forums that deal with the same high end image and video editing software that you use to see what seems to work best with other X99 motherboards.
You are using the middle Haswell-E model (I7 5930K) and this might have a bearing on which memory speed is best for your setup.
My best SWAG is that 2400MHz memory will be optimal for your use.

• Corsair has an excellent official support forum.
• G.Skill has a forum here at TweakTown with official factory support, send Matt a PM, include a link to this thread and ask him for his recommendation or you can create a new thread in the G.Skill forum and ask for his advice.
• Crucial has U.S.A. support with local personnel.
• You might find useful expert memory recommendations in the official Asus X99 forums.
• Newegg user reviews can be a hit or miss proposition. It's amazing how many supposed expert posters don't know squat.

I don't have first hand experience with newer motherboards and this is why I can't/won't provide a specific brand or memory kits.

You can learn a lot fairly quickly by doing several intelligent google web searches.

A web search using: asus official x99 forum provides links to some highly regarded web sites, some of which have Asus tech support contributors.

Thank you for the response. When I said video editing, it is for my own personal use. I play with it, and sometimes do good things, and other times give up, on any editing. So if one memory is just a bit better than another, probably will not make a difference. The main thing I am trying to do with this build is to future proof it for a few years, if possible. And I like a good picture. The computer I have now, that one of the friends put together a few years ago, is still great, but is now going to my wife, and her really old one is going to go to my workshop. This one is for me, and hopefully good for a few years. Sometimes I do things, and then a few months later, wonder why I did not spend a few hundred dollars more at the time, than need to redo at a much higher price. So, if I spend a few hundred more now, I know that six months from now I will be glad. I can understand you not wanting to make specific recommendations, I feel the same way, and you have cut my time down greatly. What you have done so far is well beyond my expectations. And greatly appreciated.
When you say a quad channel kit. Is that what I see on Newegg, as four cards all listed together as one purchase?

Yes, a quad channel kit includes four memory modules that have been tested together to meet or exceed (when overclocking) the memory kits specs.
If you bought two identical dual channel kits of similar memory to the quad channel kit it's possible that all four modules might not play nice with each other.
If you later want or need to install an identical 4 x 8GB quad channel kit your 64GB of memory should work well together although the maximum overclocked memory speed might not overclock quite as high as with a single quad channel kit.

If you aren't using high end software like photoshop or very high end video or music software your 32 GB quad core memory kit will probably be sufficient. If for some reason you want to run multiple virtual machine (VM) sessions at the same time, you probably would want to use 64 GB of memory. Ever hear of a digital audio workstation (DAW)? You could probably have a really nice DAW setup.

Future proofing is kind of like an exercise in futility. As an example I just saw a recent article on the upcoming Thunderbolt-3/USB 3.1 combination hardware at .

Progress is good but it's enough to drive us crazy.
Don't worry, be happy, you will soon have a really nice, full featured, higher end system that will easily last several years or longer.

If you want to go crazy you can always upgrade to a multiple 4K monitor setup with a three or four video card setup where each video card will cost between $500 - $1000.

How fast are you willing to spend?

Never heard of a digital audio workstation. But I have thousands of 78 records from 1900 thru1950 that I am planning to record with modern equalization and scratch supression. If that is what you mean. Take old radio shows, put them on modern media. I think nothing a medium memory should be able to handle. I will go to a couple of your suggested websites and purchase something. Thanks again.
