No response at power-on

LSD, I need your insight!
I powered down the machine normally, as I have done hundreds of times now. Unplugged everything and took it upstairs. Put it in place, plugged everything in, pushed the power button and...nothing...no sound, no lights, no fans, no nothing. I swapped out the power supply for another similar one - exactly the same symptoms. Took everything out except the bare minimum, but it acts the same. Played around with the "power sw" plug onto the mobo, but I can't see any issue here. It had been working flawlessly, but just suddenly won't even start. No smell from the PSU - no bang..nothing. Just stopped. Any thoughts at all before I RMA this board? Any way to circumvent the case switch and get the power to the board? Any way to test a PSU?

Sorry for asking but are you sure that the wall outlet is powered okay?

Here's what I've done so far: (yes, I'm using a verified power source that passes the "lamp test")
1) tried 3 different PSUs - same result
2) disconnected everything; reconnected with the basics - same result
3) completely removed and reseated motherboard - same result
4) replaced power switch with an extra one I had - same result
5) tried shorting across the power switch pins for a moment to get full power - same result
Nothing works...this motherboard is completely and suddenly dead.

Have you tried it out of the case to be sure nothing is shorting out, with nothing but one stick of ram in slot one, and your CPU/fan, and GFX card hooked up?

Do it on a Box, not on your motherboard tray

Yeah, tried all that. It is totally non-responsive. Very strange, but it appears the board is internally shorted.

Actually, I shouldn't have posted this here...just thought of you guys in the first moments of panic. This is not my Gigabyte board, but a cheapie I bought for my daughter. Maybe you can have this moved to the "other mobos" forum. In any case, the problem is rather generic. By now I have resigned myself to the fact that the board has died and will RMA it to TigerDirect.

I forgot to ask you, L. Just to eliminate possibilities: there's no way this could be a result of memory failure or CPU failure, right? I mean, if either of those had problems, I would at least get fans coming on or some kind of response. I used a meter to measure power at the main power plug, and things look normal there. Just absolutely no response to the power switch. So I'm assuming it must be the motherboard.

I would not think so, about your CPU/ram question.... Unless you static shocked either the board/ram or CPU when you moved it around

Well sometimes if a CPU is not seated or dead then no, you would not get anything. Ram dead you may or may not get lights, ect, you usually would. But either could react both ways so ya never know

Do you not have another board to test all the components in?

Have you tried ram from a different setup in it to see if anything changes?

Yes, I could swap CPU and memory from another, similar board, but I would rather not go through the hassle of remounting the HSF and thermal paste and everything. It's really bizarre...the machine was perfectly fine...it showed no symptoms of any problem. All I did was power it down, carry it (carefully) upstairs, and plug it in there. It has been non-responsive since then. No way moving it did anything. It's possible (but bizarre) that the CPU blew on that last power-down. But nothing really adds up...just suddenly dead.
I'll swap the memory because that's simple, but unless there's a compelling reason to think a blown CPU would give me a completely unresponsive system, I'd like to avoid transferring another CPU.

LSD, what about this possibility: I bought this case new to migrate all these parts into...it's a real cheapie case, like $29, including the PSU. It's a 430watt supply, but obviously not the highest quality. Could it be possible that the PSU caused a problem with the motherboard, either during run time, or sending out some spike during shutdown? This was a replacement motherboard for an old Asus mobo, because when I moved the Asus board and P4 CPU to this case, the motherboard died. At the time, I thought this was due to problems the board had suffered in the old case, but now that I have 2 dead mobos in a row, I'm really starting to suspect the PSU as the common denominator.

WOW, yeah with 2 dead boards I would for sure suspect that PSU and NOT use it to power up anything again!

Yes, it was a stupid mistake. It is a value system, but I shouldn't have skimped so badly on the PSU. It has now been replaced.

I bought a 680-watt PSU - still not a fancy one, but at least seems to be of decent quality and the guys at the store say they use that brand/model extensively in their builds and have no problems.
Hopefully, the replacement mobo will arrive today...and we shall see.
