oh yeah, and i should say that as of now, when i plug in the power cord into the power supply, the computer turns on by itself, the psu fan spins, the cpu fan spins, the cd rom drives eject, some leds on the mobo sayin there is power go on, however on my monitor all i see is the "check video cable" message...

But as he already stated it does not have an AGP slot and with that Compaq the case is of mATX design so an ATX mainboard is out of the question Yawgm0th.

am i limited to i845 - i865 or would this mobo and its "VIA PM266A + VT8235" chipset work..

That will work though its not any where near the best option (you may notice a drop in preformance over the original mainboard).

barton 2500+ oced to 3200+
512 dual channel RAM
asus mobo
80gb hard drive ( from old comp )
radeon 9600 256mb
dvd and cdrw from old comp as well

good luck on your asus, however when upgrading video cards i found asus couldnt spread the mustard, pissed me off and i found that soyo mobo is top of the line for gaming and overclocking if that tweaks ya town.

What kind of output does that PSU have? I have seen mass production companies like Compaq, IBM etc. etc. put really ****ty PSU's with like sub-200watts output---------and over time that can destroy your processor and motherboard and, well just about everything. I think that the CPU and PSU would be your problem (but if the CPU is dead because of the PSU, I'm betting that the motherboards toast as well).

buy a new case and power supply for ur new mother board.......
this will take care of thier cheap p.s. and leave room for future impovements...
i never got along with alot of small [one of a kind compaqs/dell/hp] cases...
oh and p4's had two differant # of pin outs
