i wouldnt go out and buy the biggest baddest router until i had looked at my current situation, note that wireless n is basically for LAN only so if you're doing alot of file sharing it is a must but if all you're doing is internet browsing you might as well get a cheaper one because sure wireless n has over 300Mb/s but you can only get an internet connection around 100Mb/s

Re: what wireless router to get?

I've got a household with a LOT of high traffic - I use the wireless and LAN a lot because we have 4 laptops.

My routers go boom about once every year, they can't do ANY wireless traffic after that. I think they're burning out. Now it's cutting out even on the LAN!

Would a gaming router help me out?

Re: what wireless router to get?

From someone that installs routers on a daily basis, the Dlink DIR-655 and DIR-825 are both great routers, I am personally getting the 825 as soon as possible to replace my aging WRT-54G.

DD-WRT is a great 3rd party firmware, I began using it not to long ago, but it is not for everyone. I'm sure most people could get through it with a guide or someone who has used it before. But if you do not have any idea about the workings of a network it is not for you.

If I could expand on the original Question...

Is there a significant speed advantage to going for a dual band router? Given that a home/office might have cordless phones/other devices using the 2.4Ghz band?

And if So, is there a recommendation for a router that supports dual band?

Re: what wireless router to get?

I use a 2.4ghz router and three 2.4ghz phones and we have never had any problem with interference, i dont notice a speed difference even when the phones are being used.

Hello I woder if any on can help me..I have just bought a Edimax BR-6204WG wireless router and cannot get the thing configured..I have checked the local area network connection settings to see that it will obtain DNS and IP addresses automatically - they are selected. When I go on the net and type in http://192.168.2.1 the login screen is not automatically appearing asking for the router user name and password as the manual and quick set up guide says it should..would be grateful if someone could shed some light on this for me

the password is the standard one username: admin pw: admin ,try and look for a tiny hole in the front of the router and insert a tiny pin into it to press the reset button, this will reset the settings back to default then it should connect all your pc's
