    other than turning off autostart after system failure....

    i went to m$ knowledge data base, typed in windows 98 and "restart after shutdown"

      to be honest aslepios, i think the problem (in our case) was exactly that - however it was doing it as we shut-down, i think i remember vaguely having turned off that error-crap in xp to see if that fixed it. we dont use and NEVER touch roxio coz its crap, so it wasnt that at all for us - and the person that started this thread said it happened in 98 as well as 2k after a format so, valid suggestion, duno bout relevance...

      the post about the acpi setting is most correct - the way i see it is that windows got the HAL a little muddled and was crashing on the instance it tried to shut the computer down, as rebooting worked fine.
