Are you running the RC11 driver version?
If yes, maybe the problem is that your driver is too new!!
    Yup, here's my software config:
    Driver Packaging Version 8.921.2-120119a-132101E-ATI
    Catalyst Version 11.12
    Provider Advanced Micro Devices, Inc.
    2D Driver Version 8.01.01.1215
    2D Driver File Path /REGISTRY/MACHINE/SYSTEM/ControlSet001/Control/CLASS/{4D36E968-E325-11CE-BFC1-08002BE10318}/0000
    Direct3D Version 7.14.10.0890
    OpenGL Version 6.14.10.11338
    Catalyst Control Center Version 2012.0119.1236.22534
    AMD Audio Driver Version 7.12.0.7704

I also found out that the new drivers from AMD do not support the HD 79xx series. So guess that's also the issue.

So would the lower score relative to others be the fact that I didn't OC it?

I found this, and the Performance level test (which is default for Basic now) ran at 7707 w/o OC, and 8940 when OC'ed.

So perhaps it's running as it should?

Re: Sapphire Radeon HD 7970 errors on OCCT - recommendations

FutureMark 3DMark11 Search has scores for your cpu and video card, but the top scores are for overclocked systems. You'll have to go deeper into the list to find non-overclocked systems to compare your score. Based on your 7970 review link, it looks like your score is OK, but page 1 shows that their cpu was o/c'd to 4.4GHz!!
It's probably OK to "don't worry, be happy"

ps: you really REALLY need to add your hardware list to your forum signature.

          **edit**
The first score in the list also said "Graphics driver is not approved".

So who is the turkey who suggested that you use a different driver?

You might have just missed my edit in my previous post: The first score in the list also said "Graphics driver is not approved".

Re: Sapphire Radeon HD 7970 errors on OCCT - recommendations

LOL, no problem on that one. I just did the windows 7 driver roll-back, and (for once) it worked like a charm.

So I just ran this again and I'm back where I was:
                AMD Radeon HD 7970 video card benchmark result - Intel Core i7-2600K Processor,ASRock P67 Extreme4 Gen3 score: P7838 3DMarks

No harm no foul. Well I guess I may bang my head against a wall for some things, but this card isn't one of them.

Ok ok.. will do that now.

And even the .2 driver says "Graphics driver is not approved" either. LOL.

                Thanks Professor... :D

Re: Sapphire Radeon HD 7970 errors on OCCT - recommendations

your score looks right to me,heres a review site using an x79 board and hex core chip, seemslike drivers have improved since that review

What does all this mean in terms of gaming performance? A lot. In our testing (on a system set up using an Asus P9X79 Deluxe motherboard running the Intel Core i7-3960X CPU) we saw some significant jumps over both AMD's own 6970 and Nvidia's GTX 580. The 7970's overall 3DMark 11 score was 2,734, an 861-point increase over what we saw from the 6970 (1,873) and 619 points higher than what the GTX 580 earned (2,115). The 7970 triumphed in almost all of our gaming benchmarks, often by large degrees, at least at 1,920 by 1,200. When we tested Aliens vs. Predator at that resolution, for example, the 7970's result of 55.1 frames per second (fps) was well ahead of the 6970's 47.2fps and the GTX 580's 43.6fps. The 7970 barely eked out a playable 31fps against the GTX 580's 27.2fps in Total War: Shogun 2 at 1,920 by 1,200, though the GTX 580 couldn't even run the game's benchmark with all the details cranked.

                        "Graphics driver is not approved"

This ONLY means you can't use that particular driver to submit your benchmarks scores to HWBot for points in contests, and that's often waived too depending on the contest and what site/manufacturer/members are running the contest. It means nothing to normal users who are just benching their systems to check scores, compare with others, testing, ect. - pay no attention to it at all!
