  • Problem with Sata Drive OS:Windows 7

    Hi,
I had a dual boot (XP pro, Vista Ultimate) with 3 sata HD, ans sata dvd burner. Every thing worked fine.

A while ago I became a beta tester for Windows 7 beta, and later release candidate. Still every thing went fine.

I got windows 7 retail. I decided to make a clean Install and get rid of XP and Vista.

    Then the problems started
1-the power supply died - I replaced it
2-the on board LAN card caused the OS to reboot - so I deactivated it
and installed an new network card.
3-Now I was getting bad write to second and third HDs
When I would disconnect then OS would stop crashing
So I remouved them and installed a brand new Western digital 1 TB as
second HD for a while (a couple of days the problem seemed solved)

And while I was copying a folder of 1 GB it crashed again.
I could not beleave that 4 HD went defective all at the same time.

I have tryed all HD individually and installed Windows 7 on after the other
and they all work fine untill I install as a second HD

They also work fine when I install them in a USB box as external drive
I can copy any thing to them no crashes.

Now I think that may be the Sata port or controler is faulty.
I have switch them arround still problems.

Does anybody have a suggestion short of changing motherboard or cpu.

    Thanks in advance, Guy

No expert here but I have a couple ideas for you to think about. You say PSU died, then lan, and now you can not use more that one hd ..... wondering if power supply took out part of your motherboard when it died? You do not say what you replaced the power supply with. Is the new PSU powerful enough to run your system? Even if the new PSU should be more than good enough do you have yet another one to rule out the possibility that it has issues?

      Hi, thanks for your reply

      New Power supply is
      BLUE STAR
650W SLI GAMER SATA LED FAN ATX POWER SUPPLY
the old PS was 450W - And it died with lots of sparks
      it shorted out.
Now did it do that because it was overloaded by defective parts of the motherboard
      like the LAN is't possible
or like you said it damaged the motherboard when it shorted out?
this Motherboard has onboard sound, LAN, 4 SATA ports.
I do not know that by disactivating in BIOS the LAN is like remouving
a card. It could still be causing problems.
No I do not have a extra PSU.
Money is a rare comodity now.

I suspect the on board sata controler and or sata port 2 and 3
      because
sata port 1 is the only Hard disk for now that works
sata port 4 is my dvd burner
I will try to find a pci or pci express card that has 2 or 4 sata ports
and I am not shure if I can also deactivate the on board one.

Re: Problem with Sata Drive OS:Windows 7

        Hi, all
PrairieDawg, I have baught a PCI to Serial ATA RAID & IDE controler card
        Just Installed it. (20$)

I have succesfully copied 33GB of music inmany folders all at once
took 14 minutes. No Crash of windows 7.

so first test seems to confirm that Motherboard's sata ports are defective.

But let's not rush to a solved status.

Because before when I used the old ports I would delete partitions and create new one, formated it on second HD. It seemed ok but after a day or two the problem would come back.

Time will tell. I will wait a week, and if by then all is well I will return
To declare that the problem is solved.

        See you then All, Guy
