  • Dell Optiplex

I have an old 500 MHz machine that is about as useful as a typewriter. I was planning on installing ubuntu and having the machine run my BOINC client. However, I did a search for how to throw out a busted (mac) monitor and came across these deals for old Dell Optiplex machines. So here's my question: are these machines so cheap b/c the are what they are worth - less than my _working_ 500 MHz machine, or is this the real thing? 'cause I will donate the 500 MHz to the recycling machine if they are.

    Thanks in advance.

    Re: Dell Optiplex

I Assume your looking at the OptiPlex 360 Minitower ?? Its cheap and will crunch the numbers a lot quicker than your old 500Mhz processor. The Dell does not come with a monitor unless you go up to the other model up to the $529 one with 22in monitor which would probably be totally worth it. If I was in the US I would by one just for the hell of it being so cheap. There was a week or so ago Dell in some country advertiesd some monitor at a super obserd cheap price and dell had to honour 10,000 + orders in an hour and a half before it was retracted. So If you want one and you have the $$ then order it now. Before they change their mind

      Re: Dell Optiplex

      Dell Optiplex GX270 Tower 2.4GHz 1024MB XP Pro & 19" LCD = $200

      There's a 280 (2.8 GHz) for $170 w/o monitor.

But my question was about this not being a bad computer. I guess that's too vague. Since I won't use it for anything other than BOINC, then that's the specific question... which may be too specific and I need to look into the processor's co-processor (I think that's the bit of the CPU which crunches the numbers).

So overall you're saying this is a real deal, and if I want an old machine to play with, then the 360 is better - sans monitor and more money - yes?

      Thanks for your help.

Yeah its all good. get one with a Core 2 Duo Processor if you can spare the extra cash. Dual Core is not as good.
