Re: DELL GX-50: MB? and CPU upgrade?

I have a collection of old machines b/c I like learning the different os's. My list consists of HP Mdl 710/60, Mac G4, DEC Multia (my pride and joy - it has an alpha processor), NeXT slabs and cubes, and PDP-11 (extinguished due to space issues)....

DELL GX-50: MB? and CPU upgrade?

I was given a DELL Optiplex GX-50. I found the SDRAM for it and it won't boot up. The "SETUP" (Bios?) screen is accessible (there is only one screen, that's why I am wondering if this is indeed the bios) but after I "Save & Exit" nothing happens.

    I have been doing...

    Re: hp-ux Network questions SOLUTION

There were two things that needed to be set:
    1) the route command did not specify a '1' at the end of the command,
    so it needed:

    # route add default 192.168.1.1 1

    and

    2) DHCP needed to be set to 1....

I did as you said "nameserver IP" (which was found on my mac and then again from a ping of my ISP on my PC) but neither IP's worked.

I then noticed that DHCP is disabled. So I edited /etc/rc.config.d/resolv.conf to change...

    Dell Optiplex GX270 Tower 2.4GHz 1024MB XP Pro & 19" LCD = $200

    There's a 280 (2.8 GHz) for $170 w/o monitor.

But my question was about this not being a bad computer. I guess that's too vague. Since I won't use it for anything other...

    Dell Optiplex

I have an old 500 MHz machine that is about as useful as a typewriter. I was planning on installing ubuntu and having the machine run my BOINC client. However, I did a search for how to throw out a busted (mac) monitor and came across these deals for old Dell Optiplex machines. So here's my question:...

    1) "point it to a DNS server" - do you mean Mecca? (sorry - thanks for the tip - but I need to figure what "point" means in this case.)

    2) I have tried to find the IP address of my router to do such a thing...

    HP Monster Sale (ends 4/11)

I want to get an hp laptop but have no idea which is the best deal - which machine is the most bang for the smallest buck. I can narrow my need for help down to two items - the cpu (and chipset(?)) and the video card. So if anyone has any helpful tips I'd appreciate hearing from you before Firday afternoon...
