5GB of storage?
Served through only 256Kbps of bandwidth?
I don't think so..... if you had a site that needed 5GB of space (eg pr0n site) 256Kbps will be swamped by only one broadband user, or 5 dialup users - not enough.
TweakTown has gigabits of bandwidth to the Internet - I'd prefer that setup :cool:What came first - Insanity or Society?

I was actually thinking of hosting it. People wanting to host a commercial site ( e.g http://www.tweaktown.com ) are definately better off going with an ISP or dedicated hosting company for their hosting.
I would be aiming at people who don't have, or don't want to shell out the money, and are just looking to have a personal website with a domain name hosted for free by someone like Dynamic DNS ( e.g http://brashquido.mine.nu ) with 5GB of space on my server to do there thing. And get some experience while they're at it! I'd also be able to provide POP3 and SMTP services as well!
I know there wasn't anyhere, that I could find, that offered this when I had a dial-up modem connection. Just seeing if there was any interest out there. If there was a lot of interest I'd consider upgrading my ADSL connection to a business account so that I had a static IP and, if there were enough numbers, perhaps even a 2MBPS/384KBPS connection. I do it all for free but bandwidth cost BIG $$!!
Anyway my server specs will be;
SOFTWARE & SERVICES
W2K Server
ISA proxy and firewall server
IIS 5.0 Server
SQL Server 2000
Exchange Server 2000
Terminal Server
HARDWARE
Duron 800
1GB PC-133 SD-RAM
480GB Hot Swappable Hardware RAID 5
430 Watt Power supply
DDS-4 40GB SCSI Backup Drive
Lots of cooling
Total UPS protection of 1600Va

Sweet setup..... but I doubt that the Duron 800 will cope with the load required. Win2K sucks a lot of juice out of the system, I would personally use Linux or FreeBSD with Apache as a webserver (less security holes). I tried getting a website set up at college last semester on a Duron 700 (granted there was only 256MB of RAM) but it ran like a dog. Apache will run faster :)
Just some thoughts :)What came first - Insanity or Society?

256KBPS is a tight squeeze
Tell you what though, here's a crazy thought. 2MB HDSL connection with 2.5GB per user for $20/month with a 25GB total transfer per month:smokin: :smokin: For a home served service, it would go off! Would need 250 users though to be viable:thumbs do :thumbs do

As for all those services, I have a Celeron 466 Server with 512MB RAM I was planning to kept as a domain controller for my home LAN that I could offload a few of them onto. I'm running IIS 5.0 with 4 websites on it and FTP, SMTP and POP3 services, and it goes ok and it's only a PII 350!
As for security, Linux has it's fair share of holes too! I don't want to sound like an advocate for the dark side (Microsoft), but a lot of problems with security arrise from systems not being setup properly. The same goes with Linux, it's just not as many people hear about the Linux ones because it's fun to hang crap on Microsoft and everyone hates them coz they're money hungry vultures. I work for a software development house that is mainly Unix based, and the two Unix engineers I work with have a great time with security. I must say though, if someone is able to hack your system, they can do far more damage on a Microsoft system purely because of the OS structure.

That's the big killer - and why I like the *nix's for Internet work :thumb:What came first - Insanity or Society?

I reckon it totally depends on the type of useage. Obviously open slather FTP is going to kill the connection real quick, so you'd have to throttle it. Basic web, SMTP and POP3 wouldn't add much either.
I remember the days when I was a lad and I worked for an ISP where we had a 256KBPS burst to 512KBPS frame relay to service nearly 10,000 users!! That WAS 5 years ago mind you!
Remember, I'd only be hosting personal websites. The server as a whole wouldn't get more than a 1000 hits a day with 10-15 users.
