From what I've seen lately it would appear that both ATI and Nvidia are almost mirroring each other, here are the latest
(rumoured) specs.
NV40: 0.13u process, 200m+ transistors, DX9.1 support, Q3/2003-Q1/2004 release
R400: 0.13u process, 200m+ transistors, DX9.1 support, Q3/2003-Q1/2004 release*
NV50: 0.09u process, 300m+ transistors, DX10 support, 2005 release
R500: 0.09u process, 300m+ transistors, DX10 support, 2005 release
Reportedly both ATI and Nvidia want to skip the 0.11u process, and move straight on to a 90 nanometer core.
*AKA the R420
