• Could 8500GT be a better card than 8600GTS?

The review is on a generic nVidia card pre-production card. What I want to know is, will the major nVidia partners change the performance of the cards?

Also, from the basic specs - the 8500GT maybe the best value:

The least expensive is the XFX one is $90 after mail-in. Is it better to get the 8500GT or spend the extra $130 or so for a 8600GTS - dosen't seem like much of a performance different - I mostly play Quake 4.

I would skip all those cards since they are all hamstrung neutered cards that are certain to dissapoint you in game with poor performance.

Wait 6-9 months for some decent midrange DX10 cards or pick up a used 7900GS for $100 and call it a day.

I'd go more 7900GS > 8600GTS > 7600GT > 8600GT> 8500GT myself personally. ;)

Well, you'd be wrong... but whatever floats your boat.

From a few reviews I've read, it looks like the drivers are holding back the 8600s (same as always really). If you're looking for something with future-proof features, it might be best to hold off for decent mail-in rebates when buying the 8600GTS (or just wait till Nvidia announces a super-special limited edition 8600GTX or 8600Ultra or whatever else they might be able to think up, so prices can fall to reasonable levels).
If you want a graphics card on the cheap and that's proven to work now, with high performance. The 7900 and X1950 series of cards will be for you, especially if you mostly play Quake 4, as it just requires something with decent OpenGL support, and quick RAM and CPU.

Also, for now:
7900GS > 8600GTS > 8600GT > 7600GT > 8500
When the drivers are fixed and updated:
8600GTS > 7900GS > 8600GT > 7600GT > 8500
Well, that's what I predict at the moment. Heck, the 8600GT might even be a bit quicker than the 7900.
