  • Video card Newb question

I have a 305w power supply and the video card I just picked up recommends 450w power supply. What could happen if I hooked it up anyway? And how much are power supplies over 450w? Thanks.

    Re: Video card Newb question

Using an underrated power supply could remotely cause nasty surprises such as burning out the power supply due to overload. Much more likely is the possibility that the computer will not be stable due to lack of power (random restarts, etc) or the thing simply may not start.

As for prices it would be best if we knew what currency you use and what part of the world you live in ..... for instance pricing in Japanese yen means little to me in Canada. Nor do Newegg prices since they don't ship to Canada but they seem to be a great place to shop if you live in the U.S.

Be aware that the ratings (350 watt, 450 watt, 500 watt) do not really mean as much as choice of a quality brand. Cheap is usually not good.

Currency is U.S. and I'm looking for one at maybe 500 watts.

A good 500W PSU will go for $65-$75 USD.
