  • Looking to get new vid card

I've been looking at a Saphire radeon x800gt (~$175) and am wondering if it is a good purchase to replace my aging ati radeon 9500 pro (which strangely compusa is selling a stock 9500 pro for ~$270, mine has been moddified with a Thermaltake Giant 2 heatsink).

However would this be a good move to make? is the performance increase good?, i'm currently having to run battle field 2 at low graphics levels and for some reason as well the game will freeze with a constant pitch noise running after it (unsure why).

That's not that huge of an upgrade. The 9500 Pro is a great card, and you can probably unlock it to be a 9700. Your Battlefield 2 problem sounds like it's more than just the video card.

I'm waiting to see how much ram he / she has and at what speed / latencies.

Re: Looking to get new vid card

              I have 1 stick of 512mb corsair xms ddr400 ram, sisandra states: speed: PC3200U 3.0-3-3-8 @200mhz

              [edit]
What card would one recommend for ... probably less than $300 more likely around $200-250 max. i mainly looked at this newer card for the newer core faster/more memory in hopes that it would bring greater performance, however if it's a system memory issue as well i could purchase another of the same stick stated above, i don't remember if it was buffered or not but i believe it was considering i spent ~$130 on it

              [Edit]
this would probably be the most expensive i would get :

ASUS Radeon X800PRO AX800PRO/TVD/256 Video Card - Retail

              for $245

With 245 i think your better off getting a nvidia card.

What cards in the price range of 200-300 would be a good buy to replace the 9500 pro? also what price might i be able to sell my Ati 9500 pro with the Thermaltake giant 2 heatsink on it?

that would be good but i don't have a pci-e motherboard and i'd have to buy a 64bit processor in order to use one.

i have another card to ask about too though, with AsianBatman's recomendation of the XFX PVT40KNDD3 Geforce 6800 128MB 256-bit DDR AGP 4X/8X
                          and the one i just saw: SAPPHIRE Radeon X800GTO 256MB 256-bit GDDR3 AGP 4X/8X

Yea i would too, seeing that it has higher clock, better ram, and on par with the GT for a lower price, to bad it doesn't come in AGP, not on new egg anyway.

Yeah, I hadn't thought about that. Nvidia will probably make an AGP one, but it may not be out for a few months.
