  • AGP 6600GT vs ATI Radeon 9800Pro

    Hi Guys,

Please give me your thoughts, what would you buy; Nvidia 6600GT or an ATI Radeon 9800pro. Over here in the UK, the 6600GT as only very recently hit the streets and there are limited manufacturers the most popular being XFX.
Price wise in the UK, there is also not much between the two cards perhaps 50-60 $USD.

I am running Athlon 1700XP, 512mb RAM, and play mainly online games such as Delta Force over a 512k ADSL connection.

    Thanks,

I would pick the 6600GT, but it also depends if the 9800 is 128bit, 256 bit, 128 meg, 256 meg.

Regardless of which 9800 Pro it is, I would still go with the 6600GT.

The 9800pro is the Saphire Atlantis Radeon Pro, 128mb DDR. http://www.ebuyer.com/customer/produ...duct_uid=47511

cannot see whether it is 128 or 256bit though?

6600gt, will beat the 9800pro 256 bit hands down. Look at some benchmarks, its pretty clear.

That's a huge price difference... It's closer to $40 over here, but the 6600GT AGP is still somewhat overpriced. A 9800 Pro is indeed worse, even if it's 256-bit, but if it comes down to as much as $40, most won't find that the increased performance of the 6600GT justifies the increased cost, unless Doom 3 is the only game being played...

I'd say go for an 6800 (non-GT, non-Ultra, non-LE) if it's within your budget. Go for a 6600GT if it's less than 15% more expensive than the 9800 Pro (but don't get a 9800 Pro unless you can guarantee it's 256-bit).

heh, so many people are tricked by the 128 bit version. Almost no manufacturer or advertisments let the consumer know.

I got my 6600gt (leadtek) for 265 CDN. Thats a fair price, but the 9800 pro 256 bit can be found for around ~220 If u know where to look. :D

Not in the U.S... But I have heard of plenty of people in other countries (and U.S. eBay users) getting screwed in this way. However, the only companies I know of that ever made the 128-bit 9800 Pro (and labled it that way) are Sapphire and Powercolor (two of the best, unfortunately). Not buying either of those brands would be a good way to verify that a 9800 Pro is 26-bit if the seller doesn't say.

$265 Canadian is a great price if it's an AGP 6600GT you're talking about.

ATI themselves made the 128 bit too, or I think they did? Because they were selling them at Best buy for 299 cdn, and best buy, like any other department store jack their prices way up so it didnt seem right. Furthermore I checked the box and couldent find which one it was. But again 299 isnt that big and it is getting cheaper so I cant say much. Just make sure you get the 256 bit. ^^

ATI did not make a 128-bit 9800 Pro. ATI does make a 9800SE, which is a crippled 9800 Pro (and is 128-bit).

I've never seen ATI video cards go for decent prices at electronics stores like Best Buy. I once saw a 9200SE for $150 U.S. at Circuit City when 9600XTs were going for that much, and it wasn't even AIW or anything like that. I have heard of nVidia cards going for great prices at Best Buy stores, though.

                      Low end ones only.

You can get a BFG 5200 for 49.99 CDN there after a mail in rebate. Quite a nice price. The 5500 also, but the 5700 price is way jacked up and everything here after.

You can get a nice price at futureshop or bestbuy on decent cards when they have big sales on them. Got my old 9600xt retail at futureshop for 199 cdn.
