Would the GEforce 6600 or 6800 be alot better than say a ATI 700 or 9800 pro?
I have a 2.53g p4 w/512 dual ddr and a G4 Ti4600 currently which works for HL2 but seems a little slow.
6800 is easily alot better then both the ATI cards. 6600 non gt is weaker if i remeber correctly. A 6600gt also beats the ATI 700/pro and the 9800 pro. The 700 is PCI-e only too, keep that in mind.
I think he meant 9700 or 9800 Pro, but the X700 is only PCI-E (and I wouldn't get one anyway).
A regular 6600GT is significantly weaker than a Radeon 9700/9800 non-Pro/Pro/XT, but the 6600GT will outperform any of them for a little bit more money than a 9800 Pro. A 6800 LE/regular/GT/Ultra will also outperform them (though not by too much with the LE).
But also with the nice fan and heatsink on almost all 6600gt cards, it will overclock alot better then a 9800 pro with the stock cooler. I bought the 9800 pro for now because the stupid company I bought my 6600gt from is having "troubles shipping to Canada". I like the 9800 pro, I'll see how it compares to my GT when it finally arrives.
I'd actually replace the cooler on either with the correct Arctic Cooling "Silencer" and Arctic Silver 5 for better overclocking performance. It did wonders on my 9800 Pro with the older revision that uses just an aluminum heat sink (rather than copper), and the newer ones should do great on 9800 Pros and 6600GT.
Still, I don't think the 9800 Pro is a bad OCer with the stock fan at all. Most can get close to 9800XT speeds, and some can even pass them. Not sure about the 6600GT, though...
Many reviews I saw of the PCIe version of the 6600GT had big gains in clock speeds with OC, the heatsink and fan are probably similar expect being curved now.
I would OC the 9800 pro but im returning it once I get my 6600gt and dont want to risk any damage to the card.
Hey, just wondering that, all 6800 are the same right? Besides the LE version which means it sucks worst, all the 6800 that I buy can maybe flash to a GT or Ultra right? Is it better to buy the OC version?
Enabling pipes to get a normal 6800 up to GT spec is a hit-n-miss business, but i hear they oc well (it helps that they drain less power than a GT or Ultra)
