  • Hrmm is this right? FX/9600 PRO series no better then G4 Ti 4400?

Well considering my price range i have been looking for a new video card and doing a bit of research. From what i have seen some of the more current cards offered in the Nvidia FX line and the ATI Pro series are no better then what i already have. So i am a bit stumped on what to do. Below are my current card specs.

VISIONTEK NVIDIA GEFORCE 4 Ti 4400

    4x AGP
    128MB
    Core Clock: 275Mhz
    Memory Clock: 550Mhz
    RAMDAC: Dual 350Mhz
    8.8Gb/second memory bandwidth.
    1.12 Trillion operations per second
    125 million triangles/sec setup.
    ---------------------------------------------

Now I guess one of the questions which may be the key i am missing is how much of a differance does AGP 8x give over 4x. Surprisingly the Geforce FX 5600 Ultra which is 256MB, 1.3 fil rate (my card is 1.1) still has the same 8.8GB/second memory bandwidth. In some of the cards i looked at the clock speed is even lower.

On the ATI side of things i pretty much have witnessed the same results.

I was looking to spend around $200 dollar area to upgrade to an 8x AGP card and perhaps a 256MB one at that. So far i have found the cards, but it seems they offer nothing worth spending 200 dollars over at all when i compare their specs to that of my Ti 4400.

Does 8x AGP or the 256MB from 128 make that much of a differance? Or am i perhaps just stumbling upon crap card producing companies. Thx for any advice/tips you can give me.

Hrmm, been digging around these forums and it seems the FX 5600 is crap/laughing stock of the industry from what i have read by people. Also i am guessing the ATI 9600 PRO is still pretty much the same thing as my Geforce 4 Ti 4400.

    EDIT::::::::::::

Been digging around even more on the forums, looks like i found my answer. The Sapphire ATI Radeon 9800 PRO sounds like the best bet for 200 bucks on newegg. Man i love the forums on this site. =]

The thing with the 9600 XT is that it has DX9 hardware. The Ti4400 (and all GF4's) don't have it. But, yeah for $200 or so, the 9800 Pro is great.

If you could wait a little bit, the GeForce 6600 is coming down the pipes and according to nVidia you can do 1600x1200 res in D00M3 with it. If that's true, the 6600 could be an awesome card, but I would wait for reviews before jumping in.
