enable AGP write

hi...
i went through the ATi Catalyst Installation Guide and came to a point where i have to run advanced smartgart...
i did it and now i should enable AGP Write because on my pc its disabled...
i tried to do so, but nothing changed after rebooting...
can someone say wy and how to fix that???

Ok, do you have onboard video? If so, then you may need to turn it off and set it to run in AGP mode.

no i have the ati radeon9600XT card...

No I meant, does your motherboard have onboard video. If it does then you may have to turn it off and set it to AGP mode in order to activate your AGP slot.

PS:Knowing the type of motherboard would help tremendously :D .

You mean agp fast writes? Leave it off.

Actually, my understanding on fast write is that it allows the cpu to bypass the system memory and write data directly to the video card, improving speed. The video card already can access the system memory, that is what agp is. But fast write doesn't seem to work very well, at least on ATI cards. I get better stability and performance left off.

i always leave mine on...and it does improve performance...and on some cards it is instable and on others it is stable with performance gain.

AGP Write is an option you can turn on in the advanced smartgart ond the ati driver... :D

@soyoman: i have an MicroStar MS-6712 mainboard and i dont have onboard video...

i have the same ****y problem! i cant enable agp not even on 4x.
i Have a 9600...
i used smartgard to open agp at 8x and next time i restarted my pc, i could find smartgard.. its just doesnt work!

Actually, it has long been proven that Fast Writes don't do much (if anything) for performance and has been known to cause instability in many systems. If it screws up things on the inside and doesn't give a noticeable increase in numbers, why bother?

We aren't talking about Fast Writes... But I agree. On most, if not all systems it gives a performance gain somewhere between little and none. It also causes instability in plenty of systems.

I've found that AGP write has problems on certain video cards. My 9200SE never could get AGP writes working at all, but it never had any problems because of it. If it works fine and you don't have any stability problems or extremely bad performance, I wouldn't worry about it.
