  • FX 5200 vs. Radeon 7200

Posted a while back about an FX 5200 vs. a Radeon 8500 and was told the 8500 was the same or better. What about versus a 32 mb Radeon 7200? I'm assuming it'd be better, but would it be Waaay better? (I can get the 5200 for about $40)? It's running on an FIC AZ11 mobo, can't remember if it's AGP 2x or 4x.....

The 7200 is only dx7 so good luck playing any recent games with it. The FX5200 is still a load of crap though. I don't see any reason to buy one, even on a budget.

Absolute slowest video card I will ever recommend for budget is a Ti4200, which blows a FX5200 away.

5200 is basically a desktop card. Even though it is DX9 compatible, it doesnt ahve enough speed to adequately play DX9 (and some DX8) games. If you want a good budget card, go with a Ti4200. Even tho they are a DX8 card, they can still play DX9 games (I play Halo on mine, works fine except you can have FSAA, no sweat). Ti4200's with 64MB of DDR RAM go for around $90-$100, those with 128MB of DDR RAM go for $120-130. IMO, it's better to shell out the extra $20 and get twice the RAM, you'll use it on today's games. Good luck with your new card, : peace2: Mista K6

P.S., if you do get some extra cash, a Radeon 9600 Pro it the card for you, $150, DX9 compatible, and it screams for a budget card (better than a Ti4200 or FX5600).

Why is everybody so mixed up about dx? The r7xxx series is dx8, the forgotten dx(only one new feature). Environment bumpmapping is not dx7(if it was, the dx7 cards would have it). The pixel shaders and advanced pixel shaders are dx8.1 (the one before now, dx9). So it goes like this. gf2/4mx(dx7), r7000, rVE, r7200, r7500(dx8), r8500, 9000, 9100, 9200, gf3/4ti(dx8.1). I guess not many people had/have r7xxx to know. I had plenty, and that r7000 64mb really sucked bad. My next card(older) msi gf2 mx(just mx)32mb blew it away by 100%, 2331 vs 1236 in 3d '01 even in 3d '03, despite half the mem and no dx8. 3d '03 likes 128mb.

And yes the fx5200 is way better than any r7xxx card(dx8), but not an r8500. I would go with the r8500(dx8.1) over the fx5200(dx9) any day. Even a gf3ti is better(and still dx8.1).

footnote: I recently had to switch an entry level customers r9000pro 64mb for a fx5200 128mb(a first) and it scored 6800 while the r9000pro scored 7100 w/xp2400. This had to be done due to a severe compatability problem with radeon cards and/or cat 3.8
Had no time to find out before the quick exchange chance was over so it was the only same $ option except the dreaded gf4mx440(not). Computer boulivard is selling refurbished as retail box(be warned). You could see a microcomponent was replaced (crooked, and sloppy). Anyway the fx5200 slacked way behind on every 3d '01 test except high poligon count 1 light where it was so high, it made the overall score similar(scam on nvidia's part). This does not mean that the performance is similar.

Bottom line, get over this silly confusion between dx8 and dx8.1, they are not one in the same.
Like mista k6 says, do the ti4200 128mb thing, it's your best bet for real gfx on a budget(now), give or take.

There has been a bit of confusion about dx9 and r9200. The company resposnsable for this is hightech. They lie about other things as well. Like the memspeed of their r9000pro cards being 275, when in reality, its 250 on every retail one I have worked with. Even stores that sell that brand tell buyers that it's dx9 as well. Trust me, it's dx8.1 with r9000/9100/9200, all based on the r8500. toms hardware guide

link to hitech's site claiming dx9 with the r9200
they lie about it on more than one variation of the 9200, the pci model as well.

                  second link, more lies

No, the 9500 had it first.

Only just better mainly due to its DX9 features.

That mobo is AGP 2x/4x compatible and I'd suggest either an R8500 (or better) or a GF4 Ti4200 (or better) but realistically ya mobo's SDRAM memory is one hell of a bottleneck that impacts on both CPU and video performance (so are ya really sure that ya want to throw extra $'s at it?).

Okay, I have an older system that I've been planning to upgrade. I've got the new Asus P4C800-DX 875P,Corsair 500MHz DDR RAM (CMX PRO) 1024 MB, and it's waiting in the wings for the new Processor (P4 3.2 MHz.). But, for right now, I'm just trying to squeeze everything I can get out of my present system, which includes a PIII 533 MHz(yeah, I know, it's a dinosaur...lol), 512 MB 133 MHz SDRAM, and a GFX5200 TD-128(the card with the passive heatsink, no fan, and no memory heatsinks) which a buddy gave to me, just to mess with. Now, my Processor isn't OC'ed because I just have the stock slot 1 fan on the CPU. But I'd like to bump up the vid card if possible. Can anyone give me a few pointers in overclocking the Vid card, and CPU if possible, without going too extreme, whereas I have to go and buy more cooling for this system. I don't want to lay out any more cash on this heap, and would rather save it for the new processor. Thanks gang, I appreciate it. Great site btw.

Just because ya only have a standard HSF on that PIII doesn't mean that ya can't overclock it but a lot will depend on ya mobo as to whether ya can. That FX5200 was a waste of $'s and for a few more $'s a GF4 Ti4200 is miles faster.
