now in circuitcity u can get a original radeon 9800(R360) for only 249. that is only a bite higher than some expensive fx5600U . Since its original you may oc it into 9800pro easily.
Those were my two choices as well. And the fx5600 was even 256mb. But after some investigation, I chose the asus ti4800se 128mb. And the major considerations were best performance and video in, both had vivo. The fx5600 is slower than most think, unless it's the ultra. A friend of mine "downgraded" from an msi gf4 ti4200 64mb 4x agp to a leadtech fx5600 256mb 8x agp (in the same asus 8x board) with a 1000+ drop in 3d '01. That was the major decision factor in my choice.
I must also point out, I did not need such a small upgrade from my r9000pro 128mb vivo. Which performed close to buddy's downgrade. I had a chance to get $159cdn credit for my old card and thats the only reason I did it.
Got it a few weeks ago few weeks ago, and remember, it was not much of an upgrade at all. My old r9000pro 128 beats it by 14% in environment bumpmapping and pixel shaders. And no my cpu does not make it do that. It would be the same % with other cpu compares as well.
I have kind of been out of the loop in the computer industry for a while so correct me if I am wrong, but it seems to me that ATI kicks nVidia's ass all the way up to the fx 5900. Like for instance I heard that the ATI 9600 is one of the best price/performance ratio cards. And that the fx 5200 sucks really bad. So you tell me what you think. Is ATI a better card for the buck or not.
Right now yes, but they just released the 9600XT and FX5700U. And the Nvidia card was the fastest, reclaiming the midrange sector. Both cards are a lot faster than a 5600. We'll have to see more reviews come in.
