  • Workstation Graphics Questions!!!

I got several questions concerning Work Sation Video Cards. For one, would you buy one if you had the money. Two, would they perform very good with games. Three, do you think purchasing one would be worth it for gaming. Four, why do they cost so much. Five, why is Velocity selling a computer for $5000 with a Matrox Parhelia GPU that is targeted at gamers?

    1) No.
    2) About the same as the standard versions
    3) No.
    4) Because they are made in mind for people who do a lot of modelling and rendering on the fly, and usually have a slightly better quality picture.
    5) Why not?

Actually the workstation card may not be as good in games. They are optimized for accuracy while gaming cards are optimized for speed. The workstation cards are also more expensive because they have to pay to be certified by app makers for apps such as Autocad or Lightwave. This can be a very expensive process. They also have to create optimized drivers for these apps too.

Here's a bad analogy - It'd be like buying a big truck when you wanted a Ferrari. Sure, it's got more power and it's bigger, but it's made for a different purpose.
