  • Cannot reach the 4GHz barrier on my core i7 920 bloomfield

    Hi

As it can be seen from the settings above i only need to increase my CPU multiplier from x19 to x20 to achieve 4GHz.
It should be noted that the system is stable with these settings.
However when i increase the multiplier, my windows 7 x64 pro crashes when it boots. Sometimes i get this stop code
    0X00000124 << Incorrect QPI/Vtt Voltage (To Much/Not Enough)
But since, as I've read, my QPI/Vtt Voltage is already at max. I've only tried to decrease it slightly (My memory's SPD, says that the QPI should be on 1.35V).
Ive also tried slowly to increase my Vcore from 1.3000v + 0.050v to 1.3000v + 0.1000v where after i stopped since everywhere i look people mention that the Vcore should be between 1.3v - 1.375v.

So now I'm a bit lost, is this just fate and im stuck at this speed. or is there an alternative i haven't tried yet.

Hmm looks like I haven't done something obviously wrong here by the lack of responses. :-D

Though I have another question. What is the Max Vcore voltage the Core i7 920 bloomfield can handle. ? some say 1.375 others say up to 1.550. not sure what to trust.

VID range is 0.8-1.375v, this means that is CPUs that ship will have VID in this range.
When you overclock you should decide for yourself.

Ok thank you, so i take it the max safe range is 1.375, and going above that is going outside specs. Any note on how far you can push it before it becomes fatal for the CPU, even with adequate cooling ?

Look around and see what peaople use fro 24/7.
The GIGABYTE Forum is a better place to post.

You should need around 1.25-1.35v cpu-v for 4ghz,if it was failing on 124 error then you should raise qpi/vtt voltage not cpu,you can use 1.3-1.4v for qpi so don't be scared to use more,it all depends on your cpu's imc(integrated memory controller)

Re: Cannot reach the 4GHz barrier on my core i7 920 bloomfield

Well i guess i just have a poor quality CPU then, ive been testing it with various settings. and as the settings are now i can see with OCCT that my CPU Core#1-4 jumps to around 80c when using 100% and right back to 45c when under 30% utilization. However the Core temp is a stady 40c regardless.

so i guess its a temp problem, also if i set my Vcore is 1.36V when set to auto in the bios at 3.8Ghz

So i dont beleve im going to get any higher unless i find a way to press my water cooling system to dissipate even more heat.

Which of the tests give 80c core temps CPU OCCT or CPU LINPACK.
Which cooling system is it and what is the ambiant temperture?

Re: Cannot reach the 4GHz barrier on my core i7 920 bloomfield

                    OCCT CPU: LINPACK

i guess the ambient temp is around 25c. when idle and AIDA64 ( everest ) gives the following readings

                    CPU 29c
                    CPU #1 / Core #1 45c
                    CPU #1 / Core #2 44c
                    CPU #1 / Core #3 58c
                    CPU #1 / Core #4 40c

Its the four cores temperaturs that jump to 80c when in goes to 100% load, and its almost instantly both up to 80c and back down to 45 - 50c.

So it's only like a spike in temps and then they go back down even though thee CPU is at 100% load?
Do all software show that or jus tOCCT?

No it jumps to 80c and stays there while at 100% and drops again when the load drops. almost equally fast.

That's normal, but those temps, or even a bit lower, are expected from high end air cooling.
What voltage do you need for stable 3.8GHz?

Well I've written it all at the start of this post .. but when running auto i get core 1.36volts, but I'm using watercooling.

Maybe you don't need that much, have you tried setting it lower manually?
Some other voltages may be too high as well, can you post a screen capture of EasyTune -> Tuner -> Advanced -> Voltage tab for current settings?
