  • 55degrees!!! help!!

help please! in my cmos it says my cpu temperature is 55 degrees celsius. i know that its bad i dont have any intake/exhaust fans but i dont know where to start with those(cpu stayed the same with case open though). also, the layout of my pc is very strange and sony decided to place the psu right on top of the heatsink(see pics). the cpu and heatsink w/ fan is 6.4 cm off the mb and the psu is 7 cm off the mb.
    my specs are:
    non o/c'd amd athlon 1000mhz
    unknown heatsink
    foxconn fan
    300 watt psu
    unknown asus motherboard
    40 gig hdx2
    320mb ram(256mb pny pc133, 64mb pc133 sony)
soon to be MSI Geforce FX5600 256mb

    pics: cpu w/psu on top

    cpu w/psu taken off

close up of cpu and heatsink w/psu on top

    anything else you need?
    thanx for the help!

OMG! Look at the dust in there (cleanin' it would help a bit). : omg:

Desktop cases are only meant for air conditioned places and then with a CPU like that they're marginal as they have extremely poor airflow. :hammer:

The HSF looks to be a standard retail one but with a bigger fan fitted to it though the PSU position would certainly hinder fresh air gettin' in there (likely why the non-standard fan is fitted). :(

I'd suggest gettin' a proper mid-tower case with good airflow to start with and a better HSF if ya want better coolin'.

That case has got to go. Any air that cpu fan gets touches the psu first. Where I live, a proper basic tower can cost as little as $35cdn. Thats with generic 350w psu and sometimes case fan(s). Similar psu to what comes with mass made pc's. I do believe I saw a sony sticker on the back of your case. You didnt say what city you are from, Omaha must have a warehouse store with something similar for like $25-30us.
That's the budget route. Something like this

Im just throwing my 2 cents in here as I used to sell retail computers and have a friend with a similar sony desgined case.

As Wiggo pointed out these cases are meant for business offices and nice houses with year round air conditioning, not the standard tweaker/gamers enviroment (check out some pics at the case modding forum)

I would not stick a new Video card in there until you do 1 of 2 things.

#1: Buy a new case. Really, thats your overall best bet. If you have a basic understanding of computer components just buy a new case somewhere or order online with a Power Supply of Equal or greater Watts then your original, and then transfer everything over. Youd be good to go then.

#2 What we would do at Sears when we used one of these machines and it got too hot, is just pop open the case and get a house fan and blow it directly into it. Very ghetto and very noisy, but if you want to use that video card till you get a new case, thats what I would do, before you burn up your processor.

m0s3s, glad to see you're looking for a new case, but we need a better link. Looking at a empty shopping cart doesn't tell us much ;)

Well, thats kinda wierd, was it after you had been workng the computer for a while or was it just after ya booted up, Im sure your BIOS has updates, but dont go flashing, just check and see if theres anything in the version upgrades that say anything about temperature calibration or any fixes like that.

What about sandra, does it say similar temp(around 35c) as well?
From what I have seen, it is rare to have a sensor read that far off. But it does happen. Had one yesterday, said 59c cpu temp at bootup. It was obviously wrong. My cpu is at 35c now and I just stopped playin halo after 2 hours. Look how oc'ed it is, right to the max.
And while I'm here I should warn you about that fx5600 256mb. It's not as good as most think. In conclusive tests I and many have done, even a 64mb ti4200 beats/has beat it, and the price difference can be up to 100%

I would go with the asus probe temps then. They seem more believeable. As for my nice oc'ed 35c or less(loaded) temps, without the thermaltake dragonorb3 @7100+rpm(loud), and 92mm front and rear fans(cutout), my setup would crash with a stock cooler after like 10- 15min. It crashes at about 44c. I have never seen it say 45c, it wont run at that temp.
