How does PC-7H top fan mount work?

If I want to add 120mm fans (simple 120mm air cooling, no radiator) to the top fan mounts, is it necessary to buy the 7H-1 Radiator Expansion Kit? Or is there room inside the case for the fans?

And if fans are mounted inside the case without the 7H-1 kit, is there no grille protecting the fans (the fan blades are totally exposed)?
