I've been running running this 6gb (2x3gb) kit in my gigabyte ex58-extreme for less then a year.
One dimm just went bad and i cannot be without a computer while waiting for the rma. (I asked for advance replacement; no go b/c this kit is disco)
This kit is ddr3 2000 (pc3 16000) but the highest i could run it at (stable, at 1.65v) was 1728mhz.
My i7 920 is running at 2.88ghz with no voltage increase. I've never been about trying to get crazy overclocks, but i want to get what i pay for.
So when buying a new kit i dont know what to buy.
Your thoughts are appreciated.

Check out your cpu. The cpu has the memory controller in it. The memory controller may not be designed to reach that memory speed. Raising the Mhz of the memory is an overclock to that cpu's memory controller. Read the bottom of this page. Intel Core i7 I7-920 AT80601000741AA (BX80601920 / BXC80601920)
You will want to make sure everything is connected correctly.

thanks for the response, the on chip mem controller is def 1033 by default but default is no fun!
I actually did end up getting advanced replacement from kingston.... which is awesome and solves my problem
