  • KHX12800D3LLK3: Best timings

    Hi,

I have an Gigabyte GA-EX58-Extreme, fitted with Kingston HyperX KHX12800D3LLK3/6G (triple channel, 6GB), running @1600.

When I purchased the kit, it was sold as 8-8-8-24. The XMP profile for 1600 states 8-8-8-20, even though it is automatically configured as 8-8-8-24 (which doesn't seem to make sense).

I'm currently running it with manual 7-8-8-20 timings @1600 and was wondering at what speeds/latencies other people managed to run this memory. I'm also wondering if there any more advanced timings that can be tweaked slightly beyond the XMP-profile.

    Klaus,
I have these sticks on a Gigabyte EX58-UD5 board and have found the same problem. It auto configures to 8-8-8-24 settings.

Do you have any start up problem? I'm getting random POST failures when the boad shuts down with the DDR phase LED lit with a green and amber light.

If you need help with your settings, please grab a template from my signature and post me your current settings and I will advise back.

I do advise you set your own memory settings, I do not think XMP is very good for X58 because you really need to find and set your own QPI/Vtt per your CPU. So you might as well also set your own ram timings and disable XMP

Thanks for your help offer lsdmeap,

Here's my current settings. Essentially, basic auto set up.
My problem is that I get a POST failure - with DDR phase LED lights staying lit up when I try a warm restart. A cold restart seems to work fine. Clearing CMOS also helps sometimes.

(Have triple checked connections, and tried taking peripherals out to no avail)

          Re: KHX12800D3LLK3: Best timings

I do suggest you update to the latest BIOS as F5 and F7 are very old and have many issues, F9i >>

After F8d they added some advanced memory settings, and along with that several memory kits were made more compatible as the previous BIOSes did not properly work with certain IC Chips used in some kits.

So please do update, Beta BIOS is fine they are all I personally use and they include fixes and improvements long before final BIOSes do. And you MUST load optimized defaults after you flash, then save and apply and reboot back to the BIOS before making your needed changes (Don't forget SATA Settings, especially if you are using RAID). Please see my guide here if you are unsure about the proper BIOS flashing procedures, and do not use @BIOS!!

At 1600Mhz you may be able to run 777-20 with more QPI/Vtt voltag, ram voltage, and Uncore speeds, but you may not want to use the voltages needed to do so. 788-20 sound good, but if you want to try 777-20 I can help you try if you like. I do see you are not setting your own voltage for the ram or QPI/Vtt and this and your starting from Fail Safe settings is likely the cause of your issues, these must be set manually after you tweak them to find the best amount.

          Then try these settings
