Is there any way to OC the 667MHz memory?
Is it worth getting 1066 memory, I won't be upgrading my setup for the next 6 months and IT is actually kinda waste of money buying a DDR2 1066MHz memory right...
I O.C-ed it to 3.6GHz but it was giving me blue screens and display driver problems and I was really impressed and happy with the speed.
    Thanks!

I got it to 3.6GHz, with the 9 multiplier, but the downside i was running it on 4GB of RAM!
Should I try it on higher and get another two sticks of 4GB? Does your CPU makes alot of errors?

      Re: Ga-p35-ds3l , x5450

      Good News!!!
Your memory modules are not 667MHz, they are 800MHz.

In your screen-shot, your cpu is not overclocked and the FSB (Front Side Bus) is 333MHz. With the 2.00 memory multiplier, your memory speed was 667MHz where 2.00 x 333 FSB results in 667MHz memory speed. If you had used the 2.40 memory multiplier with the 333 FSB your memory speed would have been 800MHz.

Your kvr800d2k2/4gr memory is a kit that has two 2GB modules.
Your kvr800d2n5/2g memory is a single module and you have two of the 2GB modules.
You should install the kvr800d2k2/4gr modules in the #1 and #3 memory slots and the kvr800d2n5/2g modules should be installed in the #2 and #4 memory slots.

ALWAYS unplug the power supply's A.C. cord from the wall outlet before you remove or install any hardware in your computer.

Does your CPU makes alot of errors?
No, my system has very few errors.
Your current problems are probably due to incorrect bios settings.

With 8GB of memory you will probably need to set:
      Code:
DDR2 OverVoltage Control__ [+0.100V] <--- 0.2 volts might be needed
      PCI-E OverVoltage Control_ [+0.1V]
      FSB OverVoltage Control___ [+0.1V]
(G)MCH OverVoltage Control [+0.1V] <-- one click higher might be needed
CPU Voltage Control_______ [Normal] <-- this setting [B][COLOR="#0000FF"]might[/COLOR][/B] also be optimal with a 10% overclock
Before you start overclocking you need to run each of the Prime95 stress tests, one at a time for 8 to 12 hours. If there is a worker error during the test, this means that your system is not stable and the test(s) should be stopped. It's important that your have a rock solid, stable setup before you start overclocking.

Part of your problems might be because you did not load Optimized bios default settings (F7) before you made your first bios changes.

You can save yourself a lot of time and grief if you use the F11 (save CMOS to Bios) and F12 (load CMOS from Bios) function keys so that you can save and load stable and testing bios profiles. See page 34 in the P35-DS3L motherboard manual.

Read through the first 100 or so posts in Luke's Xeon overclocking thread for additional bios tweaks and pay attention to the useful information provided in the screen-shots that include HWiNFO, Memset, any other programs that provide detailed information about your system. You will also see that I stressed that it is important, nay critical to provide detailed information about the types of errors that occurred and the settings that were used.

Once your system is fully stable, a 10% overclock to 3.477 GHz (9.5 x 401MHz) with memory running at 802 MHz should be relatively easy.

          What tests are you running?
Are you running any of the Prime95 stress tests?
How long are you running the tests?
How high are the cpu temperatures during the tests?
How much memory is installed? 4GB? 8GB?
Are there any problems or errors?

            Re: Ga-p35-ds3l , x5450

Thank you so much for your patience and interest in this really "old" topic, but these Xeons CPU really got in my interest,
I was running the P95 test, In-place large FTTs (Threads: 4)
            Code:
            [Nov 29 13:48] Torture Test completed 409 tests in 11 hours, 19 minutes - 0 errors, 0 warnings.
CPU temperature was around: 35-38 beginning of the testing, I had to go to school.
(I will need to clean out my CPU cooler though its abit dusty but not rusty)

The picture I posted (BIOS) loaded with F7 default settings with all 8GB of RAM installed.

Going to mention again, when i left only
kvr800d2k2/2gr memory in the slots (#1 && #3) my BIOS was showing 800MHz.

I think this memory is dying, I notice sometimes that when I play some high end games like (Playerunkown's Battleground) I receive the following error: 'The Instruction at 0x####### referenced memory at 0x#######. The memory could not be 'read'.

              Re: Ga-p35-ds3l , x5450

Part of the problem is that you didn't include detailed screen-shots that showed some of the settings that were used. Look at Luke's screen-shots to see the amount of detailed information that he provided even when everything was OK.

When you include a screen-shot, you need to arrange the individual windows with useful information and discard the rest of the screen that doesn't help to show what settings were used. I save my screen-shots using the PNG file format so that the image quality does not degrade each time I modify and re-save the file. My monitor is 2560 x 1440 and if I post the full screen image most of the data will be to small to read.

Your KVR800D2K2/2G memory modules are two years newer than the KVR800D2N5/2G modules, but the N5/2G modules have faster 5-5-5-18 primary memory timings with a 400 MHz FSB. You might be able to run with both kits installed if you use the slower 6-6-6-18 primary timings of the slower memory when your FSB is set to 400 MHz.

I do not think that your memory is dying, the problems are probably caused by using settings that are not correct.

When you make bios changes, you need to verify that the System Memory Multiplier is properly set up based whether you are using a 333 MHz or 400 MHz FSB.

Attached is a sample cropped HWiNFO screen-shot that also includes a cropped image of your memory kit details. HWiNFO provides useful information that sometimes shows details that might be related to stability problems.

                    Re: Ga-p35-ds3l , x5450

In post #8 this is what your HWiNFO screen-shot tells me:
                    • In the 1st group, Physical Memory Used + Physical Memory Available = 1976 MB + 6214 MB = 8190 MB --> 8 GB of installed memory.
                    • In the 2nd group, Bus Clock = 333.3 MHz, Core Ratios = 9.0 and the current, minimum, maximum and average Core Clocks are all in the 2.999 MHz range --> no cpu overclock.
                    • The cpu core temperatures are all similar so you probably recently booted your system and/or you captured the screen-shot shortly after starting HWiNFO.
                    • In the 5th group, Memory Clock = 333.3 MHz and Memory Clock Ratio = 1.0 mean that your System Memory Multiplier is set to 2.00 and your memory is running at 667 MHz, i.e. your memory is underclocked from its 800 MHz rated speed.
                    • In the bottom group, the cpu fan speeds in the mid 600 rpm range are probably because you haven't run higher load programs.

I mention this because HWiNFO along with Memset v4.1 and/or several Cpu-z windows provide a way for me to make sure that there are no contradictions between what settings you say you used and what the screen-shot shows. It's all to easy for someone to post their bios template settings and accidentally include incorrect settings. Later today I will include a screen-shot with Cpu-z and Memset windows that help ensure that some of the memory settings are properly set.

I see that you recently posted new bios settings using 400 MHz FSB along with 800 MHz memory speeds.
The problem is that the 5-5-5-18 primary memory timings are too "tight" for your slower 4GB memory kit.

Use the "looser" 6-6-6-18 primary memory timings whenever you have the KVR800D2K2/2G modules installed. When needed, running with looser memory timings can help with system stability.

                      Re: Ga-p35-ds3l , x5450

The Prime95 Large FFT is best for stressing the memory sub system.

I would run the Large FFT test for at least 6 hours if there are no worker errors.
Next would be the Small FFT test for at least 4 hours followed by the Blend test for at least 4 hours.

It's best to run longer stress tests to ensure that your system is really stable.

I would not run your current overclocked tests until I knew that my system was stable with the 8GB of mixed memory modules.

A summary of my Prime95 Stress Test Recommendations
                      With no worker errors:
                      • 3 - 4 hour stress test shows that your system might be stable.
                      • 6 - 8 hour stress test indicates that your system is mostly stable.
                      • 12 hour (or longer) test implies that your system is stable.
                      • 50 hour stress test shows that you are paranoid.

I already did the large FTT's test for 11 hours, so I will do the small FTTS and the blend test later tonight.
I also do not have the settings for the memory timings in my BIOS :(

Found the settings finally and I ended up with 6-5-5-18 timings and a blue screen after a bit.
