RAM Speed in H61 boards.

I have a GA-H61M-S2PV rev 2.0 board, max speed 1333.

But I noticed other similar boards depending on the rev they can OC to 2200.

Exemple GA-H61M-S1 max Ram speed:
rev. 2.0 : 2200
rev. 2.1 : 2200
rev. 2.2 : 1333
rev. 3.0 : 1333
rev. 4.0 : 1333

Is this a hardware thing? Because they look very similar. Could potentially boards like mine OC to 2200 modifying the Bios? Has it been done?

wikipedia LGA 1155 says:

Sandy Bridge based processors officially support up to DDR3-1333 memory, however in practice speeds up to DDR3-2133 have been tested to work successfully.^[4]

The H61 chipset only supports one double-sided DIMM per memory-channel and therefore is limited to 16 GB instead of the 32 GB like the others support.^[5] On H61-based motherboards with four DIMM slots, only four single-sided DIMMs can be installed.^[6]

Footnote [4] refers to the following AnandTech article (page 3):

AnandTech's conclusion says that there are very limited benefits to overclocking H61 memory, especially higher than 1600MHz.


The following web searches might provide information about memory overclocking for your motherboard.

Whether or not your motherboard can run 1600MHz or faster memory will depend on what features your Gigabyte bios has. Even though a similar H61 motherboard from another H61 manufacturer can overclock its memory, this does not mean that your H61 can.

Check to see if any memory manufacturers' web memory finder application (such as Crucial, G.Skill, Corsair, etc.) lists compatible 1600MHz or higher memory kits for your motherboard model. I don't know if it's possible to overclock your current 1333MHz memory to 1600MHz because I don't have any experience with overclocking LGA 1155 or newer motherboards.

I found this review ( Rev 2.0 ) https://translate.googleusercontent....BYisWcaDXt6VbA they use Sandy Bridge 2600k, and they have the limit of 1333mhz like me, that I have a Sandy Bridge.

But I'm planning on getting an Ivy Bridge i5 non-k, and the same reviewer uploaded a bios settings video with a 3770k. Witch shows features that I don't see like XMP, and apparently they can select up to 3000mhz of RAM speed.

You might be able to find some additional youtube videos that deal with overclocking memory and running an Ivy Bridge cpu in your H61M-S2PV motherboard.

The specifications page for your v2.0 motherboard says that it uses an AMI EFI BIOS.

A web search using: how to mod AMI EFI bios returns results for AMI UEFI bios.

Follow the links to win-raid.com where they have tutorials and they can answer your questions after you join the forum and create your own thread. I'm pretty sure that you will need to do the dirty work, but with their guidance. A good starting point is their Preliminary Notes at the beginning of their [Guide] Manual AMI UEFI BIOS Modding thread.

Be sure to add a detailed hardware list to your forum profile in their forum.
