  • Easy Tune6 on H77M-D3H doesn't load

I've tolerated the CPU fan noise on my i3-3225 for awhile, and thought I'd try to just reduce the speed to see how that worked out.

First, I tried the latest version of Speedfan, but every time Speedfan started, Win8.1 would blue screen with a "DRIVER_IRQL_NOT_LESS_THAN_OR_EQUAL" message on screen.

Then, I tried "EasyTune6," which includes fan control. The latest version listed on the motherboard download page was B12.1122.1, dated 2012/11/22, but doesn't list Win8.1 as being compatible. I installed it anyway without problem, but clicking on the shortcut for ET6 only results in a progress bar onscreen (repeating twice) as if it's loading, but then nothing. I also tried running it in "Compatibility Mode" for Win7.

I found a later version of EasyTune6 via MajorGeeks: "B13.1211.1, Author: Gigabyte, Date: 04/29/2014 01:30 PM," but it doesn't work, either.

Is something wrong with my motherboard and/or is there a version of ET6 that is compatible with the H77M-D3H and Win8.1?

    Welcome to the forum.

With older versions of ET6, when you run ET6, it would take up to 15 seconds for an ET6 icon to appear in the windows task bar. You would then right click on the icon and then click on the Show option to open the ET6 window.

      Re: Easy Tune6 on H77M-D3H doesn't load

Thanks, profJim. How did you know patience is not my forte? :-)

I waited 30 minutes and no icon appeared on the taskbar nor in the system tray.

After clicking the Windows UAC prompt, this progress bar appears twice, each time taking between 30 and 35 seconds.

While that is happening, this process appears in the Details panel of Task Manager:

Then that process closes and nothing remains.

        Re: Easy Tune6 on H77M-D3H doesn't load

I'm running win7 and use an administrative account.

The screen-shows my tray with the mouse hovering over the ET6 icon just below the Easy Tune6 build information.
Note that the program name is GUI.exe on my system.

Does your mobo user manual have an ET6 information section?

Can you try to run ET6 in win7 compatibility mode?

I've included a partial screen-shot for the Gigabyte utility download page.

Look at the three notes in the Easy Tune section.

BTW, patience is a virtue that is usually in short supply.

          Re: Easy Tune6 on H77M-D3H doesn't load

Win7 compatability mode made no difference.

This is from the H77M-D3H utility download page:

I think the problem is that it is not Win8.1 compatible. As mentioned, I did try a later version dated 04/29/2014 which I assume is Win8.1 compatible, but I suspect it is not for 7-series motherboards.

Other utilities on that page show Win8.1 support, but not Easy Tune6. Maybe Gigabyte abandoned support for Easy Tune6 with Win8.1 on the 7-series? :-(

PS: Not sure what the "GWUM Tools" are that should be uninstalled, but pretty sure I don't have them installed.

          [Edited to add:]

The shortcut installed on the desktop linked to: "C:\Program Files (x86)\GIGABYTE\ET6\ET6SC.exe" so I had set that to Win7 compatibility, then I noticed that your screen shot was of GUI.exe and in Task Manager the process that was loading on my computer was GLD.exe so I went into that directory and changed ALL the .exe files -- all 18 of them -- to Win7 compatibility mode. Even after a reboot, no love from ET6.

            Re: Easy Tune6 on H77M-D3H doesn't load

The last two o/s entries in your screen-shot say: Windows 8 32 bit, Windows 8 64 bit

The ET6 version that I linked to is 8.1 compatible for Intel 8/9 series but it does say "Support may vary by model".

Is there a windows 8 compatibility option for your system?

It's possible that ET6 isn't supported on some or all H77 motherboards.

I think that GWUM tools were used with ET4.

              Re: Easy Tune6 on H77M-D3H doesn't load

              We're making progress!

I found I had archived ET6 v.B12.1228.1 which is still v.12 but later than the v.B12.1122.1 offered on the Gigabyte web site. I undoubtedly had downloaded it via MajorGeeks, as well.

It installs, and "kinda" works. ET6 shows up on screen with the following alert:

It's a tropical downpour right now so I can't even hear the CPU fan to experiment, but I think I'm on my way now. I do notice that ET6 mis-identifies my CPU as i3-3220 instead of i3-3225, but that's no problem. I just hope that even though ET6 misses the data (the old sentimental fool,)<g> that it works.

              Thanks for your help!</g>

                Re: Easy Tune6 on H77M-D3H doesn't load

                The denouement:

Last night when it was quiet: no raging thunderstorms, no noisy air con, no traffic noise, etc, I decided to test ET6. At first, I didn't think the fan control function wasn't doing anything. I set the fan to and and couldn't hear any difference. Then I turned on Open Hardware Monitor to watch the fan speeds, and actually ET6 was doing its job: fan speeds jumped from about 950rpm to 1700rpm.

Turns out the irritating fan noise is from my power supply! The stock Intel HSF on the i3-3225 is pretty darn quiet.

Sorry to have taken so much of profJim's time, but I am grateful for his input. It's a nice feeling to know you're "not alone". :-)
