  • Upgrading RAM in EP45T-UD3P to 2x4GB DDR3-1600

I have the following rig I have been running flawlessly on WinXP for the last 5 years:

    MoBo: Gigabyte GA-EP45T-UD3P Rev 1.0

    CPU: Intel Core 2 Duo E8400 @ 3GHZ

    CPU Cooler/Fan: OCZ Vendetta 2

    Current RAM : OCZ Reaper Series PC3 14400 (PN OCZ3RPR18004GK) (8-8-8 @ 1.9v) - 2 x 2GB

    GFX Card: GeForce GTX 280

    PSU: PP&C Silencer 750 Quad

Case: NZXT Tempest with 3 intakes and 3 exhausts (big 'uns)

Recently Upgraded to Win7 and want to upgrade RAM to 8GB DDR3. I bought G.Skill 2x4GB RipJaws (PC312800) DDR3-1600 9-9-9-24 1.5v kit. I tried simply taking out the OCZ RAM and putting in the new sticks, but it wouldn't post. I know now i have some changes to make in the BIOS, and I have searched and read around here for a few days, but I am too far out of the game to know what to go play with confidently. Help me! I dont want to mess this up...

Just want to be able to use the new RAM (or know i need to RMA it and get something different), and MAYBE overclock this CPU a bit.

The last time I really played with Overclocking was with an old Celeron in college and then an AMD 2500+ on a K7S5A i think.

Thanks for helping me out...much appreciated!

I bet as long as you set the timings in the bios to what's on the stick and maybe up voltage to say. 1.6 but no more than 1.7 (call G.Skill for best confirmation) range it will be ok. Also think I remember something about using the red memory slots instead of yellow ones in some cases. Well if you are only using two sticks that is. Might try the latest bios for your board.

Yea wtih only 2 modules you have to use 1 & 3 or 2 & 4 per the manual. I was thinking though - do I have to set my FSB to 400? if so, how do I do that? It's currently at 333 MHz. CPU screenshots below (with above mentioned parts, not the GSkill in there yet):

Re: Upgrading RAM in EP45T-UD3P to 2x4GB DDR3-1600

          Welcome to the forum.

Many ddr3 compatible P45 and P35 motherboards initially had trouble running ddr3 memory at the full rated speed.
Your goal right now is to see if you can get your system running and stable with both modules running at 1333MHz.

Try booting with only one module installed in the #1 motherboard memory slot.
          The maximum memory speed with FSB = 333MHz and system memory multiplier = 4 is 1333MHz (4 x 333MHz).

The maximum safe memory voltage is probably on the sticker on your memory modules.
You will need to find lowest dram voltage that is stable with your new memory.
Your will probably need to manually set MCH Core = 1.26 or possibly up to 1.32 volts.
A few kits required lower Mch Core voltage settings.
Mch Core that is too high or too low can cause instability or reboot loops.

It will help if you post the following windows in a cropped screen-shot:
          • Memset using the SPD and ">>" tabs
          • cpu-z CPU and Mainboard screens (several instances can be run at the same time)
          • EasyTune6 --> TUNER tab --> ADVANCE tab --> VOLTAGE tab (only the Voltage tab is needed)
          • CoreTemp screen [for your cpu's VID (Voltage ID)]

Links for these programs are in the Latest Overclocking Programs, System Info, Benchmarking, & Stability Tools thread.

Once your system is stable with both modules running at 1333MHz, you can try for higher memory speeds without overclocking your cpu where you will use a higher FSB setting with a lower cpu multiplier.

You haven't told us the exact model number of your memory kit.

We need detailed information about ALL OF THE HARDWARE in your system.

We can best help you after you create a detailed hardware list in the System Specs
portion of your forum profile at the bottom of the profile page or in your forum signature.
Be sure to include brand names and model numbers.
When you are done editing or creating your hardware list, save the settings.

It appears that the G.Skill website still does not include information for pre-X58 systems.
I couldn't find any memory/motherboard compatibility lists for P35 and P45 systems on their web site.

The attached screen-shot might be for your memory.

OK - good stuff. Ill give the 'real work' a try when i get back from work.

Here's the memory details though: F3-12800CL9D-8GBRL
            It is DDR3-600, PC3-12800

With your current optimized bios defaults, use the recommended settings in the first part of http://forums.tweaktown.com/gigabyte...tml#post295784, post #5 and then apply the settings below.

note: Providing the screen-shot described in step #4 in the above post will provide useful information once you get to the windows desktop.

Try booting with one memory module in slot #1 and use the following bios settings:
              Code:
              [FONT=Lucida Console][B][SIZE=2]Advanced Clock Control ------- [Press Enter]
[COLOR="#0000FF"]CPU Clock Drive ---------------- : ??? <-- show the values displayed in your bios for these four settings
              PCI Express Clock Drive -------- : ???
              CPU Clock Skew (ps) ------------ : ???
              MCH Clock Skew (ps) ------------ : ???[/COLOR]

              DRAM Performance Control
              Performance Enhance ------------ : [Standard]
Extreme Memory Profile - (XMP) - : [Disabled] <-- Leave this Disabled
              (G)MCH Frequency Latch --------- : [333MHz]
              System Memory Multiplier ------- : [4.0]
Memory Frequency (Mhz) --------- : [Auto]
DRAM Timing Selectable --------- : [Manual]
              Standard Timing Control
              CAS Latency Time ------- ?? ---- : [9]
              tRCD ------------------ ?? ---- : [9]
              tRP -------------------- ?? ---- : [9]
              tRAS ------------------ ?? ---- : [24]

              MCH/ICH
              MCH Core ------------- 1.100V -- : [Auto] <-- set to 1.24 - 1.28 for DDR3 memory, higher or lower might be needed

              DRAM
DRAM Voltage --------- 1.600V -- : [Auto] <-- set to the max rated ram voltage (for most memory)[/SIZE][/B][/FONT]
The Gigabyte EP45T-UD3P Memory QVL List states "Model Name: EP45T-UD3P DDR3 1600 ( downgrade to DDR3 1333)" and you might not be able to boot or have a stable system with higher memory speeds.

There were only 3 memory kits that specified 4GB modules in the list.
The memory QVL is old and motherboard manufacturers seldom update these lists with older motherboards.

If your system can't run at 1333MHz speeds, it might be fine with slightly lower memory speeds.

You will need to find the proper MCH Core voltage for your system.

If you have any problems, provide a detailed description of the problems.

Saying that your system won't boot, freezes, or gets BSOD's won't help at all.
The devil is in the details!!

Re: Upgrading RAM in EP45T-UD3P to 2x4GB DDR3-1600

                @dan61psu

Check out the http://forums.tweaktown.com/gigabyte...-ddr3-ram.html thread where there were similar DDR3 issues with 8GB of memory. With their P35C motherboards, some of the memory kits couldn't even boot. There is a lot of useful information in the thread and there are instructions about providing needed information.

In several posts they said that they read many accounts where P35C owners were able to use 2x4GB of DDR3 memory but apparently they didn't know which memory kits worked. In post #27 one poster said:
Bought this ones "Team Group Elite Series DDR3-1333 CL9 - 8 GB Kit" and they work.
They are also 1,5V and they work. It is not depending on the voltage.
It is a German site and you will need to translate it.
In post #28 I posted a link to the Teamgroup 1333MHz memory kit and a summary of its specifications.
Will the Team-Group memory work with your motherboard? Maybe, maybe not.

G.Skill Ripjaws DDR3-1600 CL9 8GB Review - Overclockers Club is a review of your memory and they claim that is was designed to work with newer 2010 motherboard models, and there is no mention of compatibility with older motherboard models.

Let's see if we can get your system booting and stable with your current memory.

                  OK - tried the following:

Took out old ram, put in one module of the new stuff, and tried to boot. It rebooted itself twice, then on third boot attempt is just sat there spinning fans. i got no beeps, no screen, no keyboard flash, and the cpu cooler tower fan doesn't spin at all.

do i need to change bios settings with the old ram in before shutting down and putting in the new module(s)?

Is this a stupid, time wasting adventure? Is there a better suited 8GB solution for me, or is this Mobo kinda capped at 4GB (which would be stupid becuase i bought it 5 years ago hoping to be able to expand)?

If you search the web for EP45T (or EP45C) boards and 8GB of ddr3 ram you should find links to ddr3 memory reviews and/or individuals who were looking to use 8GB of ddr3 memory. You can also use the forum's Advanced Search tool to Search Titles Only for EP45T or EP45C systems that were trying to use 8GB of ddr3 ram.

If you don't mind RMAing your memory, you can check with the online, phone or live chat with memory manufacturer's tech support. Crucial memory has an 800 toll-free phone number, live chat and their forum. Other manufacturer's should have at least one way for you to get in touch with tech support.

No it's not a stupid waste of time unless you consider trying to learn something new a waste of time if you can't get the memory to work.
It looks like Teamgroup memory might have some kits that will possibly be reasonably trouble-free.

Re: Upgrading RAM in EP45T-UD3P to 2x4GB DDR3-1600

Update for all people who may be in a similar boat down the road - i posted over on G.Skill's website, and they confirmed I am stupid and the 1600MHz RAM i bought wont run on the EP45T-UD3P as the max is 1333 for RAM. So, they suggested i get the 1333 series modules...that's on the way from newegg. Post over there is here:

Have you had any luck finding any Teamgroup memory kits that might be compatible with your motherboard?

                            @profJim -

I emailed their tech support but got no response. I may still try one of their 1333 kits if the 1333 kit from G.Skill doesnt work out.
