  • Problems regarding overclocking - need help reverting to default values in order to successfully boot to desktop

Awhile back I used EasyTune 6 to overclock my E8400 to 3.6GHz (up from 3.0GHz stock).

Then, during a period of system instability with BSDs related to a Razer mouse driver, when I was trying to set the clock speed back to default I noticed the GUI of ET6 had greyed out the options I had used to overclock and thus could not use the same method to change back to the default of 3.0GHz. I switched to my Logitech wireless mouse since the Razer mouse required physical maintenance and system performance was acceptable from then on.

Recently, I discovered that somehow my clock speed was set back to 3.0GHz. I have no idea how this happened. I went back into ET6 and set the FSB (or what I believe was the FSB, I can't recall the exact display of the program's display) to 400MHz (the E8400 is recommended to use 333MHz) through the manual options (not the program options I had used before) and restarted my computer.

Now, I cannot progress past the Windows loading screen, it just goes to a black screen and my monitor goes to standby. I have tried the following:

-I entered the BIOS settings and tried "Load Optimized Defaults" and "Load Fail-Safe Defaults." Neither appeared to have any affect, I could still not progress past the Windows loading screen.

-In the BIOS settings, I briefly tried manually editing the CPU Clock Ratio, the Fine CPU Clock Ratio, the CPU Host Clock Control and CPU Host Frequency, and Performance Enhance to no avail.

-I did figure out how to enable my keyboard during DOS screens (before, whenever an unexpected shutdown occurred, the keyboard wouldn't respond and I wasn't able to boot in Safe Mode) and was successfully able to boot in Safe Mode. I tried and failed to uninstall ET6 and reinstall the latest version, and received the error "Handle table driver failure" or something which I assumed was due to the fact that the Windows installation wasn't enabled in Safe Mode.

I am at a loss. By all accounts, I believe I should be able to boot just fine to the desktop using the Load Optimize Defaults or the Load Fail-Safe Defaults. Is it possible that only clearing the CMOS jumper would fix this? I would deeply appreciate any help whatsoever, as the entire troubleshooting process is immensely stressful and as you can imagine, I need to use my computer.

Thanks in advance, and please don't hesitate to call me on any idiotic bone-headed moves (I hope this is the right subforum) or request more system information (I could probably get a DxDiag.txt through Safe Mode, yes?). I really need to get this problem fixed.
