Hello, I have a Ga-p35-ds3 with mod for 771 Xeon e5450 I am quite lazy on the overclocking question I tried in some ways and always within 8 to 10 minutes I get BSOD, if anyone can help me I'll be grateful. My goal is 3.6ghz no more than that. Thanks

      Welcome to the forum.

We can help you after you have provided detailed information about your hardware.

When there are problems, such as BSOD's, provide a screen-shot from WhoCrashed v5.53 (free HOME edition) that shows details related to the crash.

You need to provide detailed cropped screen-shots that show what settings your system is using, including Cpu-Z (Cpu, Mainboard and Memory windows) , Memset v:4.1, HWiNFO and any other performance or benchmark windows.

Any time you make changes to your bios, post a new copy of your bios template that details which settings are set to AUTO, and all settings that have manual changes.

I have included a screen-shot and my bios template from my P35-DS4 system at the end of this post.

We need detailed information about ALL OF THE HARDWARE in your system.

We can best help you after you create a detailed hardware list in the System Specs
portion of your forum profile at the bottom of the profile page or in your forum signature.
Be sure to include brand names and model numbers.
When you are done editing or creating your hardware list, save the settings.

      Sample filled in bios template
Copy this template into NotePad or any plain text editor and fill in the bios settings. Save a copy of each bios template you create and paste the full updated information in your post each time you make any changes.

      Code:
      CPU = Core2Quad Q9650, E0 SLB8W , cpuid=1067A [core stepping, sSpec, batch]
      Motherboard = P35-DS4, rev: 2.0

      • Re: Socket 771 Mod Xeon X5460 GA-P35-DS3L Overclock

        Hello,

        I just got a modded E5450 E0 to swap my old Q6600 OC @3Ghz.

i did the bios mod (inserted microcodes) and the cpu works PERFECT ( i tested 2 hours with prime95), Core Temp even shows a VID of 1.18750 (thats what i use also) and my temps are cant go higher than 65C on Intel burn test (60 on prime95).

I want to overclock it to 3.6Ghz (or more if possible) BUT whenever i try windows 10 refuses to boot no matter the volt i use! It says that i need to use a recovery disk to repair windows, but when i remove the overclock windows boots up fine!

these are my settings Click image for larger version

          • Re: Socket 771 Mod Xeon X5460 GA-P35-DS3L Overclock

            Welcome to the forum.

It looks like you are using two different brands of memory and this might be part of the problem. You need to include the part numbers for your memory, memory sizes and how much memory you have installed.

When overclocking you can't just jump to much higher speeds and expect things to work.

A single two hour Prime95 test isn't good enough to say that your system is stable.

Your best source of information is to do web searches for sites or forums that deal with Xeon overclocking and/or P5Q motherboards.

The following web searches will help you find information that will help you with setting up your bios and how to stress test your system to make sure that it is stable.

search using: xeon p5q overclock guide tutorial official

The following links should help get you started.

Another site that might help is XtremeSystems Forums

Some sites might have P5Q bios templates where they have included bios settings that will include some suggested settings that will help.

I've included a bios template at the end of this post that you can copy and add your settings. If you want to post your bios template use Notepad or any plain text editor. I save a copy of each bios setting template that I try and add notes to it that describe what worked better and what problems I encountered.

You might find some youtube videos that will help you with your overclock.

Hopefully you will find some good sites that still have a couple of members that can provide additional help, but there probably aren't very many people that have moved away from P45 systems a long time ago.

If you have images stored on the web, such as DropBox, you can include multiple images and/or screen-shots in one post.

Sorry, I don't have experience overclocking Asus motherboards.

            • Re: Socket 771 Mod Xeon X5460 GA-P35-DS3L Overclock

Thank you for welcoming me and ofc thank you for your effort!

First of all i want to clarify that the problem ONLY occurs when i overclock E5450 (its fine without overclock, and also it was fine with the Q6600 OC or stock).

This is the kind of problem that i have: IMG_20170221_141356.jpg - Google Drive / IMG_20170221_142103.jpg - Google Drive pressing Enter or F8 does NOTHING.
1-2 times it said my MBR is damaged, other times it just showed a "blue" (not the bsod one) without anything in it...
but as i said the problem goes away if i put back the default fsb, i have done sfc check, both online and normal (as its described here System file check (SFC) Scan and Repair System Files & - Microsoft Community ) but everything is fine.

I dont understand whats the problem with my windows (SSD reports fine also in Samsung Magician's SMART).

              I have tested the rams (memtest86 7.1) for 8 hours when i was on Q6600 (B3) and 5 hours on E5450 (E0), not 1 failure.
but i just removed the 2 kingstone rams and still the same problem.
I also tried to put manually the "1st Informantion" of the "slower" ram, but that also didnt help (i even memtested it again...).

i have done my share of overclocking (and i have read "almost" everything there is on 775 overclocking), i was able to easily overclock my Q6600 on the exact same hardware to 3Ghz with the EXACT same settings (except volt) and i tested with metest86 and prime95 for 8hours each without any errors.

Above is a similar Screenshot like yours.

Bellow is what you asked, the ONLY difference with the overclock i try to do is that the "FSB" and "FSB Strap to North Bridge" are set to 400.

Have you seen something like that? its like overclocking messes with windows files, BUT after i return to stock its like it never even happened....

              • Re: Socket 771 Mod Xeon X5460 GA-P35-DS3L Overclock

My suggestions are based on my experience with overclocking Gigabyte P35 and P45 motherboards.

I see several settings that might be part of the problem.

With 4 x 2GB of memory the following settings should help:
                • set DRAM Timing Control to Manual
                • set DRAM Voltage to 1.90 or 2.00 volts
                • set primary memory timings to the looser Transcend settings using 6-6-6-18
                • set tRFC (Row Refresh Cycle Time) to 54
                • set NB Voltage to 1.20 (note: up to about 1.28 volts might be needed)
                • set CPU PLL Voltage higher, but do NOT go higher than 1.59 volts (with Gigabyte overclocks, the AUTO setting can set this way too high!)
                • set CPU Voltage to AUTO and see what the applied voltages are from your monitoring software

                For your initial overclock set
FSB Frequency to 338Mhz (yes only 5Mhz higher) to see if you can boot into win10.
                Set
FSB Strap to North Bridge to 333MHz (note: the AUTO setting might be OK)

For now, disable the Asus bios options that are often or usually enabled to enhance overclocking.

                • Re: Socket 771 Mod Xeon X5460 GA-P35-DS3L Overclock

I just tried "everything" you said.

                  i set DRAM to manual
i set DRAM voltage to 1.90 and 1.96
i also set all the timings "memset" shows in "SPD" to the slower ones (but i used 55 tRFC).
i set NB voltage to 1.20 and 1.26
i set PLL voltage to 1.54 and 1.56
and i set CPU voltage to AUTO (cpu-z reports 1.2460).
the only thing i did not do as you said was the FSB, i used 400 (so that means 3.6Ghz), my ram's are kinda "eccentric", they dont like to be overclocked! (it doesnt even post with downclocked ram) so i run them at 800mhz (stock).
OK i tried the 338 FSb, i tried with ram on auto and and 333 (816mhz), still same problem with the restart... :(

in both "low" and "high" voltages the system boot fine in windows!
BUT now i have a new problem...

when i RESTART, and windows finishes doint its part of the restart, the system fails to restart!
what happens is that it SHUTS OFF and then ON again BUT it doesnt post... (i have to do a battery pull).

i also tried to set to AUTO EVERY voltage setting (except PLL that i set to 1.56) to see if it will work, BUT the system couldnt even post after applying the new voltages! (again i had to do a battery pull).

lastly i also didnt "disable" the bios options that "enhance" overclocking because i was able to go into windows just fine with them "enabled".

so now we have a new problem that the system can NOT restart normally!
what do you think i should try next?

I assume that you can save one or two bios profiles with your motherboard.

I suggest that your clear your bios using the following steps:
                    1. turn your system off
                    2. unplug the power supply's power cord from the wall outlet or the back exterior of the power supply
                    3. press and hold the front panel power button for 20 - 30 seconds to dissipate stored energy in your system
                    4. remove the CMOS battery from the motherboard
                    5. follow the procedure to clear the CMOS that is in your motherboard user manual (note: sometimes it is necessary to clear the CMOS for sever minutes, several hours or sometimes overnight)

Try booting your system with only two memory modules installed and see if you can get to windows using the minimal 338Mhz FSB frequency overclock.
If needed use the 2.00 memory multiplier to keep your memory speed below 800Mhz.

Other testing options include using a lower cpu multiplier with a higher FSB.
                    You could try using 8.0 X 375Mhz = 3000MHz stock cpu speed and memory = 375MHz x 2.00 = 750Mhz.
If this works you could then use the 8.5 cpu multiplier and your memory would still be below 800Mhz.

yep, i can save 8 profiles and i have saved profiles for both the "stock" 3ghz and the tests we are doing.

everytime i mention a battery pull thats what i do. even 5 seconds are enough (after the little green led disappears) to make my motherboard loose all its settings and ask me to either "press f2 to load defaults" or "press f1 to go to setup".

as i said i can get to windows now, no problem! even at 3.6Ghz with 400 FSB, (i have tested all voltage options one to one and it seems that if i put more voltage on North Bridge it boots fine in windows every time).

but i have the problem with the restart... after a restart it doesnt post :(

Are you talking about a warm restart?

Does this happen when you power off your system and then do a cold boot sometime later?

just tested, it happens on both occasions.

so i am able to boot into windows fine every time but after a restart or a shutdown (even 15 mins later) the system does NOT post.

ofcourse if i dont OC everything works perfect.
i want to also add that i did 9 hours of prime 95 on the NON OC profile (the one on the template but with stock fsb) without any errors and max temps where 54 on the package and 52 on core 1 (rest under 45).

This is a long shot, boot into windows with an overclock and after you shut your system down, unplug the power supply's power cord and don't reconnect the power cord until you want to restart your computer.

An interesting test would be to boot with an overclock, but instead of shutting down, put your system into hibernation and see if your system wakes from hibernation.

how much time you want me to "wait" before i reconnect the power cable and open the pc again?
i want you to remind you that my motherboard has a little green led that draws power and when this led "shuts off" then 100% the motherboard/psu has no power left.

i have hybernation totally disabled (windows command), is this test important? so i have to re-enable it?

I would wait for at least 15 - 30 minutes or longer if you want.

The hibernation test might turn out to be a work around for your restart problem if we can't find a better solution.

When you say that your "system does not post", does this mean that you need to pull the CMOS battery each time this happens with an overclock?
